Anyone else have probs getting in to the z4 in frost?

Past couple of days (having had frost/snow)i have had to pour warm water over the drivers window so it drops when the handle is pulled otherwise i cannot get in as the window is recessed behind the rubber seal. I guess theres no way round this. Pretty frustrating all the same.

Mine was a bit frozen and sticky last night, but I just ran my finger round the window frame a couple of times and then the door opened/window dropped ok.

I use Gummi Pfledge on all the rubber seals.

Do you garage your car?
I see your in glasgow, i'm north east england and i'm sure you have a lot of snow also. A little finger rubbing wouldn't have done much this morning down here lol.
I needn't have bothered anyhow because i couldn't get the thing off the drive anyway.

I spray de-icer around the window frame and leave it for 10-15 minutes, the ice will melt and the glass will drop.

I had this very issue the other day, took 20 mins to get in the car!

Now this is when we need the iPhone APP to do 'remote start' - keep it locked, start engine, heating on full, heated seats on. Then when I go to leave on a morning I can just hop in and be toasty warm ; )

With all the snow turning to ice, my drivers door and window were frozen solid last night. I ended up going in the passenger side which was protected from the snow/ice and climbing across. That was quite a performance. :? :P I knew I would have to be seated in the drivers seat to get it started. Has anyone actually tried moving from the passenger seat over to the drivers side? I'm not keen on the idea of de-icer around the plastic trim and rubbers.

NO - hot water on cold glass - BANG/CRACK, mega bucks! As others have said treat the seals regularly, I use Gummifledge.

+1 on the Gummi Pflege, excellent stuff.

Now, this business about the water to defrost - as you do stryker, I always use warm water (for me, from the tap, never a kettle) to defrost mine and have never had any issues - even with a slight crack in my windscreen (MOT friendly spot / size). My old boss used to boil the kettle, take it out and pour the water all over his A4 - I suspect that's a problem waiting to happen. Although who determines where warm stops and hot starts? My theory (and it is just that) is that if I can put my hand in the water, it's not hot enough to crack and car window.

Z4 Beemer, ha! Had to do it once in my e85, wasn't pretty... turns out I'm not that dexterous.

I don't have a Z4, but have a new Mini, which has the exact same problem.

It too has a frameless glass window that drops, I find spraying deicer into the crack works quite nicely. Though sometimes have to wipe leaks off the inside window after.

Def a big 'no-no' on even warm water on a frozen window. It's the temperature change that matters so -10c glass to plus 30c water (still won't feel that warm) is an instant 40c change.

Either cover it to keep water off overnight or be patient while de-icer works.

Anyhowz - if you think you have problems - try and X5. When they get really cold the door won't catch closed shut and there is nothing you can do until it warms up aside facing it into the sun or holding the door shut while you set off (not something that is practical)

Same problem here!Frozen solid!

Not been able to use it all week (using the other car anyway because of weather). My missus MINI has been OK but the window needs to drop further on the Z4!

Need to use it tonight though!Suns out now so hopefully it will unfreeze!

I ALWAYS use warm water on glass and always will! It was a requirement for previous (less water-tight) cars as even with it de-iced, they would still steam up and ice on the inside!

As long as you don't just chuck on a load at once its absolutely fine and by far the quickest way. I use an old Fairy bottle and run round the car dribbling the water down the windows. After 2 quick laps of the car it gets the windows upto positive temps. If you touch the glass afterwards, its only around 5-10C so in reality you're only warming them up at less than 2C a second.

You can also use it to warm up stiff wiper blades, washer nozzles and the window rubbers so the window will actually drop... Trust me, only an idiot can smash glass with warm water!

Oh I also use Rain-X too, helps nicely :)

EdButler, same here... well aware of the science behind thermo shock, but whenever needed I'm out there with my drinks bottle full of warm water. As this is a public forum, yes I have heard of one incident where someone has cracked their windscreen, but I will keep on doing what I do.

The other theory, which is interesting, if that cold water works best as it freezes slower than hot water.

Accepting the risk involved, the main thing that bothers me is putting water on the floor to freeze!

I got a tarpaulin from Sopers before the snow hit. Great protection for the windows, roof and the roof motor! Took it off after there was four inches of snow on top and no issues what so ever. Would highly recommend it.

+1 for the tarpaulin :)
Overkill if you have a hardtop but saves defrosting windows and doors open easy
Needs to be dry underneath it to stop it sticking though

I had a slightly different problem this morning. My remote key didnt work to unlock the car or open the boot. Tried it for ages. Eventually had to admit defeat and open with the key in the door. This set the alarm off and made me look a right idiot. :( Alarm went off after I started her.

It definately wasn't the battery in the key as it works fine now. I can only put it down to the cold but I have no idea why!

-6 degrees when i went out to the car this am and a little grief to open car, didn't put the roof down as i didn't want to damage the seals around roof, drove a little way and let car warm up, temperature rose to -3 degrees and down came the roof for some glorious morning sunshine in the snow :)
Just looked online at gummi plege that looks like a top tip, will try it out. Thanks guys
