Any electricians on here? (UK)

Always glad to help, i haven't asked and perhaps i've missed it in the thread but what did your estate agent have to say? They should have been all over this straight away.

Hmm, they would have a field day in my place then as I wire everything myself to the higher European standards as I could not live with the fact that these odd light cicruits pop the fuse whenever a light bulb goes :)

Interestingly enough, my previous house I did the same and got it cirtified by the council upon selling so I am not sure what they are actually looking at, but that was 12 years ago.

Estate agent said nothing, in fact I don't even think they spotted it. First I heard was buyers solicitors asking my solicitor for the certificate.

I'm surprised the agent didn't find out from your solicitor whilst progressing the sale, if they had i would have expected them to contact you with the solution. May have arisen between scheduled chases? Who knows, anyways sounds like it's getting sorted

It is often the Surveyor who finds these things ( assuming your Purchaser had a survey ) most Estate Agents wouldn't know one end of Building Regs from the other or their relevance

Don't you just love the UK and our ability to make even the most simple and straight forward things difficult in terms of regulation, HandS compliance, HR compliance, regulatory compliance etc etc. Looked up a phrase in a UK Theasaurus recently - Common Sense - found it had been deleted :P

Have to agree - some of it's plain stupid. Just had all my windows replaced with UPVC. They have been fine for years and now with new building regs those that were OK with 3 panes now have to have 2 panes so fat lard arses can get out the window in the event of a fire. Strange given if I'd done as I did before and put new glass units in the same frames it would be just fine.

Yes,part-p in particular is a step too far,as all decent electrical companies/sparks will be NIC-EIC and/or SELECT registered, and the main reason they brought in part-p was to try and stamp out cowboys and bad diy-ers.

In my (and other electrcns) opn tho,it doesnt do this. All it does is mean that,as a Fully Qualified electrcn, with around 20yrs exprnce,i have to pay more money to register as part-p compliant,go on a short course, etc and ,in theory, wouldnt even be able to sign off on work in my own house,if i wasnt part-p compliant....if i lived in England or Wales.
(tho this is the same for niceic approval,as u have to be registered with them, and pay around £1k per yr,to give out test certs that are accepted for Local authorities, etc and by Ins companies,(for private landlords, etc).
Just more money to be given to control bodies....
and if cowboys still want to do ppls electrics, when they may not even be properly qualified sparks, then they will carry on doing so,imho

Anyway, hope u get it all sorted. as i said,it should only be an hour or 2 (tops),of an Electricians time
(It takes only 3-4 hrs,for ur avg 3/4 bed house to be fully tested)

Story so far... electrician came round and said it's "not too bad" but pointed out a few non-conformities... cables not joined in proper box and no RCD are the main 2... Anyway, he is coming Tuesday morning to fix it and will issue the certificate same day, so hopefully that'll be the end of it.

Any update, I'm NICEIC registered only just read up on this thread, Craig said something about costs and cowboys, just to let you know I went to price up a job the other week for a local, wanting lights and extra sockets in lounge usual stuff, think the final price worked out at about £225 inc Certificate through my NIC membership, few days later found out they said I was to expensive and got their mate round to do it. People don't care about electrical certificates they just want to push buttons and plug stuff in, sad but true. Everyone accepts they need a Gas Safe Engineer to work on a boiler but nobody cares who messes with the electrics, Industry is on its ass...

Update, yeah.. We had an ELECSA reg'd electrician round who was shocked (not literally!) by the state of it... the other guy had snipped the earth to the lighting circuit! He fixed it all up, put an RCD in for us and gave us a certificate with a load of gubbins I didn't understand... apparently he has logged it with ELECSA, who in turn log it with the council and we should expect another certificate in a week or so (not that we need it, the one we got from him is fine)

... lesson learned

I agree Greg..too many cowboys and bad diy-ers out there, unfortunately. not to mention the high amount of polish imigrants working as electricians on sites these days, being subbed the work by bigger firms....half arent even polish sparks!! what a mess they leave behind, that i often have to put right :headbang:

Just went to a callout tonight, a local guy tried changing a couple of light in the house, usual story, on a standard loop in loop out circuit connected all the lives together and neutrals and switch live together even though it had red sleeving round it lol, took me about 15 mins to fix both faults and charged him £20 had he rang in the first place I would of probably done it for £40 and saved him half a day of messing around, the only reason he rang was because he was down to his last 5a fuse and it was going dark haha :P

Ive been charged £50 a light before :o - that was over and above the included install for a conservatory extension!

Does not help that the UK electrical installations are non logical though, all based on a copper shortage from a 100 years ago.

Yeah but people would rather die than pay for stuff round here...

I am only speaking for myself here but I am a terrible cynic when it comes to tradesmen doing work for me, I tend to feel I am held to ransom somewhat and they can charge what they like, so I can see why people go for the cheapest option. If I knew a sparky who I could rely on not to rip me off (as I have now) then they would certainly get a fair bit of work from me. I don't mind paying a bit extra as long as I know it is a fair price... I know there are a few "recommend a tradesman" sites out there but they tend not to be very well populated, so it is mainly a case of sticking a pin in the telephone directory and hoping for the best.

A very common occurrance,unfortunately...got to laugh though, its always the loop in wiring that gets them confused, lol
