Any computer boffins could explain how to set up an WAP ?

Hi as above , I have the sky sagem router installed , works great in the house but I have just installed an airport express to use with garden speakers and I'm having problems .

When I'm using the iPad outside im accessing a library which is inside....the wifi signal is 1 to 2 bars outside and is causing my music to cut out often .

I'm looking to buy another router? Run it off my first router and sit it in the soffits of my house which should give wifi outside .

Can anyone help with this ? What do I actually need to buy? Will this work if I'm streaming music through the first router yet controlling the library through the second ?

I guess I just need to extend my current wifi ..

I bought one off amazon for about £12 delivered, took a bit of fiddling and needed a separate laptop to change its IP address but your on the right lines. I used an Ethernet cable for set up and it's now wireless extending the range of the original router

Music cutting out may not be the signal but rather the speed of your router, I'm using N speed equipment, if you a on B or G speeded stuff it may not be quick enough for what u need. Latest iPhone and iPad are N

Can you wire the new access point to the original router using a network cable? If not you'll need a wireless extender which will pick up the wireless signal from your existing router and "repeat" it. They can be problematic though so my choice would be to avoid them.

If you can't run a cable, I'd look at a couple of network over power connectors and connect a wireless access point (not a router) to one of them and your original router to the other.
 
http://www.devolo.co.uk/consumer/77_dlan-200-av-wireless-n_starter-kit_product-presentation_1.html?l=en these are great - let you create a wireless network from your main router where ever you are - just plug one end into your router and a power socket, and then plug the wireless transmitter into a socket anywhere in your house and it makes a wireless network extending your original LAN so you can access internet/music.

Trying to extend a wifi with another wifi router isn't easy/possible unless you have the right equipment

I read some where that Sky broadband requires you use their modem/router
May have changed but worth checking
You really need (as above ) an N or N+speed for today's broadband
 
Between this and trying to get my apple tv and airport express to work properly I'm cracking up !

I have the sagem 25045n which I believe is "n" type ....

I thought to create an WAP you had to use another router , didn't realise a WAP was hardware I buy ?

I can run ethernet no problem to second router....

So buy a WAP , connect with 5m Ethernet then configure ?
 
Dr nick , those look interesting are they similar to the home plugs I read about ?

Would this be a better option for me ?

Running cables etc is no problem , it's the config , ip address , mac , LAN etc etc
stuff I struggle with !
 
Yes Jamster1, they are home plugs - I have used them to sort out wireless problems in a friends house with very thick walls - very impressed with how easy they are to set up - and once set up you can just plug the wireless plug in any socket and it should work - have even had no trouble using it down in the pool house at the end of the garden.

You won't be able to get your airport express to extend your sky router network, only join it. You can only extend by a so called "daisy chain" of wireless apple products with apple products.

WAP = Wireless Access Point

To extend a wireless network's range, you would ideally use a wireless access point that needs to be hard connected to the main network via a network cable, or devolo or similar home plugs. If you can run a 5m Ethernet cable, Bob's your uncle. There are a couple of "gotchas" you need to be aware of:

Some wireless access points have what is called a DHCP server built in. This gives out IP addresses to devices that connect to your network. You only want one on a home network and your Sky router is it.

Next a wireless access point will probably come with a default IP address of its own, that might conflict with the sky router, or another existing device, so you'll need to configure it with its own unique address before you turn it on.

The you'll need to tell it to use a different channel, but the same network name (SSID) which will probably look like "sky012345" or similar

If you get this right, you'll be able to move a wireless device around the network and it will automatically move between the router and the access point :)

Yep, or the slightly faster TL-WA901ND for about £30.
