Not exactly ground breaking, but fitted my ZHP gear knob today and throught I'd share it with everyone. I followed the advice on previous posts and kneeled either side of the gear stick to remove my old one and it came off easily. Gear changes are now definitely improved and feels a lot nicer so very pleased :)

Looks the business. It really is a worthwhile mod for very little money and improves gear changing.

I've seen this a few times on here. I can't understand why just the knob changes the gear change. Can anyone enlighten me?
The gear change is a mechanical a action of many parts, how could the knob alter what is essently a not very nice thing. I've a manual and the change is awful !

The point is that the standard knob lacks any weight. The replacements are heavier, which adds some momentum, a more decisive feel.

Anyway, it's a sports car, and the gear change is tough and mechanical. You can try a 350z just for the sake of comparison.

Awful???

Do you drive a c3 daily?

The shorter stick makes the shift shorter as well... And therefore a little bit quicker

Feels nice too, a flick of the wrist instead of a whole arm movement.

Whoa whoa whoa!!! A few digs in there for a little critism of the car. ! Surely just because we own Z4's it doesn't mean they are infalliable !! All cars have "traits" and the first thing I noted on nine was the less than smooth gear change. It's notchy !! Especially 1st to 2nd and then 3rd.
For back up on others comments on perhaps trying other cars... My z4 is the 62nd car I've owned so I do feel I've had a little experience In driving others. Well that and the fact that I trained as a gearbox mechanic as a yuuf.

I'd like to know what the std knob is too? (Queue titters) Mine is quite slim and is chrome and tapered at the top.

A notchy 1st to 2nd is a common complaint on Zeds

Have to agree, 1st and 2nd annoy me (my saxo felt smoother) and the CDV. I could find 99 problems. But all doesn't matter because I can't put my roof down at the lights and feel like a god!

Well thanks guys. Felt a bit attacked for daring to say anything that wasn't how amazing the zed is !
This was the point of my question.... How can just changing a gear knob remove that notchy feeling 1st 2nd and 3rd ! My mechanical brain says it can't. Simply adding a few grams in weight can't remove that as its the action, linkage and gates along with synchromesh and great clusters all doing stuff. It's a case of things having to all line up nicely to actuate a smooth change.

Also better to be gentle rather than yank yank force ..

I think there is more of a knack to learn on it as sometimes its smooth. Others it's a try again to get gear.

Don't get me wrong tho... I do love my zed, got 37.8 mpg from Huntingdon to central London and back yesterday whilst out buying a bike. Nice!

It can't remove the notchy feeling which I like, but being shorter and a bit heavier improves the feel.

Buy one, if you don't like it you can easily move it on on here as they are always in demand.

The extra weight and short throw makes a difference in terms of feeling. Think how bad a gear shift on a an old hatchback feels compared with the zed? The weight adds a solid feel to the shift - but doesn't make a difference when the clutch come up (slight kangaroo from 1st to 2nd)

The other thing that makes my gearshift better was to remove the CDV (quick Google will reveal lots on CDV). Combined with ZHP it makes a winning combination

As adamski said.

Remove the cdv you will feel the smoothness increase as the clutch bites/ releases faster.
