Another speed awareness Course (probably)

Got snapped by the van at 42 in a 30 at the weekend... not happy about it as I knew that's where they camp out but I was focusing on joining the road from a side road so I gave it some beans to get up to speed... a few too many beans as it seems!

I could use a van awareness course more than a speed one!

I went on one of these 6 years ago... painful stuff... I guess I should just think myself lucky I'm in the threshold for the course (42mph inclusive), but still kicking myself a bit!

Look on the plus side, you live in the happiest place in the UK

The speed vans are over the moon I bet :D

Bad luck J, hope his zapper was broken.

LOL, unfortunately not, hence I know how fast I was going ;)

Last time I said to myself I'd just sit there for 4 hours and shut up... ended up arguing with the guy. At least this time it's in a decent hotel in Harrogate, last time it was in some crappy ex-offenders centre in Manchester, LOL!

Within a decade we will all have have black boxes fitted linked to insurers so have fun while you can.

Mandatory for all news cars from October 2015

How many years gap do you require between courses ?

Also, I think they only offer a course if you are very close to the limit. I was caught doing 34mph in a 30mph and I think the max was 36mph for the course.

3 years gap before being allowed to take NSAC again. In most counties, the ACPO recommendations are accepted ie 10%+2mph over the limit and NSAC offered between 36-42mph.

If it does go that far maybe the next step will be to link the box to the satellite and that then can dictate your cars speed automatically by adjusting your car to the speed sign you just passed.
No more courses or fines then just toddle along behind everyone.

Did the course recently. A very boring 3 hours. Better than 3 points however.

My wife just got caught last week in a mobile trap, 37mph in a 30 zone.

I did the course 3 years ago so I'm due another one!

I kept an open mind and have slowed down since. I was the youngest one there and the most knowledgable, they asked me a few times if I had done one before to which I replied "no, I just take an interest in thinking what I am doing whilst driving".

The only time I "argued" was when he said "the least experienced driver here is once again correct". I pointed out that although I was the youngest (at 27) I highly doubted 15,000 miles a year plus European tours and riding mopeds/bikes since my 16th birthday, I doubt I was the least experienced driver in the room - he apologised.

 glad you won.
So what kind of bollocks do they "teach" on these courses then?

The 2 stand out points were)

1) they asked everyone to clap when the instructor clapped - I realised my young, super human excuses for speeding weren't what I thought they were

2) they asked everyone in the room If a kid ran out in front of you from nowhere (no legs under a car etc) from x foot away (can't remember the exact numbers), what the next thing you would do is - I went first and said hit it, twenty odd after me said things like "pull the handbrake" etc, I was right

I am no driving god and there is a time and a place for any antics.

Incidentally, I ended up on the course for overtaking 6 cars in a 30 (100m before a national with no turn offs, people, pedestrians, dogs, cats, chickens etc...) because they were doing 20 (there was a temporary sign saying 20mph 1 mile ahead). I was on the brakes when I saw the van and got done for 36 in a 30.

At the time I would have been happier to go to court and take my punishment on the chin. Ironically, I think the course made me a better driver

Tell us more!!!!!

First of all when they asked reasons why people speed everyone was giving excuses (late for work, downhill, didn't see the limit etc)... I said "fun".... mentioned people don't buy sports cars to tootle at 30. I also said sometimes the limits were wrong (he didn't like that one).

The other one is I asked him to give my feedback regarding motorway overhead signs (fog etc). I told him the reason most people ignore them is 9 times out of 10 they are wrong... it's like the boy who cried wolf; unless they get it right most of the time they will not be observed. Again he didn't like that much.

The only thing I got out of it that I didn't already know (or was common sense) was the "think bike" message (via showing a short video).... everyone should see that!

......... one point that has always stuck in my mind from a safety course ( Ive done loads through work ) .......

they claim that according to the numbers ..... if you hit someone at 30 mph, the chances are they will survive.
If you hit someone at 35 mph, the chances are they will die .....

it does make you slow down in town ...... :D

Or makes you speed up, as you wouldn't want to leave them alive and quadraplegic, brain-damaged

How about we teach people to not blindly walk out into the road / between cars.

Or, if you drive at 5mph over the limit, you'll be passed the pedestrian before they step out onto the road.
