Another roof problem thread

Hi all,
Sorry to start another thread, i've searched but can't seem to find the answers I need.

My roof worked perfectly yesterday morning, opened and closed as normal.
Yesterday evening I went to go out and put the roof down, and it has stopped. The windows will go down, and the roof motor near the windscreen will unlatch itself from the windscreen, but after this there is absolutely no movement at all. The motor is making a noise like it's straining to do something but there is no movement whatsoever. I can pull it back about 5cm but after that it's stuck solid. If I try and close it from this barely open position, it will close and latch fine.
The lights on the buttons are red not yellow, and will flash when the roof stops moving.
I've read a lot about the bowden cable in the boot, and had a play with this, tugging it in and out etc, but no luck. Some people are stating there is a brass part that might be seized but I have no clue how to access this or what I'm looking for, and no threads i've found have included pictures.
Considering the motor is making a noise and unlatching itself fine, I can't get it down manually and it just stopped working in a 6 hour period, I'm inclined to think it may be jammed rather than the motor packed up?
Any help is appreciated, and sorry for starting another roof thread!
 
It can stop working at any time.as the top is unlatching and windows lowering then relatching.this points to a motor issue.
Been there done that,you have to get to the motor to access the cable that may be stuck.either way its probable the motor needs a refurb anyway.there is a few great threads on here around motor refurd and relocation to the boot

Unfortunately Durham is a fair way to go for me :(
Would the roof motor stopping also prevent the roof from being lowered while the red cable is pulled out?
 
No, cable pulled and the roof should lower and raise manually............well mine does and has done for a couple of years now.

Does though depend on what the blind end of the cable is doing?
 
When mine packed up ,it took two people to put even pressure on the front of the roof to ease it down evenly,otherwise the roof could get distorted .
 
Update: The roof is very reluctant to come down, however if I hold the button for 30+ seconds the motor overcomes the resistance and lowers the top (albeit very noisily). When I raise the roof, it rises at normal speed, and latches into place as normal.
Is the motor still suspect if it can eventually lower the roof and raise it as normal?
 
I would not trust that motor , roof should lower in about 11 seconds,I would wager it will be on its way out very soon.

On my old e46 330 cab it would work intermittently before it finally packed up

I've got the shelf etc out of the way, so I just need to wriggle the motor out of it's cave and see if it's salvageable. I've tried to free it a little bit already, it moves around but doesn't seem to want to come up at all. Any tips on this step?
 
Have you got the motor out of it's black plastic case?
If so you can either leave it there or get a good grip and pull it with gradual force towards you and up,whilst doing this try and snips dwn back to cut the ties.
Be very careful not to cut hydraulic lines
These are clipped into channels on the motor casing I found it easier to take top off case first and take motor out to give you more access and a better view of what you are doing,persistent is a must along with patience,good luck and a good torch may help .

That's very generous of you Bryan and I might take you up on that in the near future. Is relocation to the boot also something you can assist with?

Yes it is, I did another members a few weeks ago and he started a thread here about it . Easy enough to do , I can talk you through it on the phone or arrange to come to me and we will do it together .
