Lol,
Can't wait for Rick Hunter to see these :D

Ok I had 4 lug nuts laying around, So I thought instead of spending a stupid $19 per pin at leatherZ
http://leatherz.com/Merchant5/merch...de=S3WheelPin&Category_Code=SafetyConvenience

Id make my own,
No they might not be as nice but Free > $40

So I cut the heads off the lug nuts, grinded a small notch for welding,
Then found some straight steel rod I had around the shop and went to town,
Then I took the grinder to the welds and this is the finished product,
I didn't bother to polish it up or grind the welds smooth as this is a home made tool but I thought you might like to see :D

They are straight, They look a little weird in the pics, Probably the light,
and ignore the "work towel" lol

These are so dam handy when it comes to taking the wheel on and off,

BMW sells them, They come in the tool kit from the factory from other models,

But as you can see its a plastic end and it doesn't really secure very well,
It just "hangs" in the lug nut hole and it would have been better if you could thread it into the hole,

and it costs money where my little rods were free lol

Well, thats it

I have more useless mods on the way  (although this one was quite handy)

You have WAY too much time on your hands. :poke:

I was actually thinking you had made spikes that you could install on your wheels like the old Gladiator Chariots.

Oh dude DON'T give me ideas! lol

Very good idea and since I've just had all four wheels off again and being ultra careful not to touch the inners on the new larger calipers and rotors that would have been very useful.

CJ - we are supposed to have them in the X5 toolkit, but I could not find it. I have bought the LeatherZ one as getting those wheels on and off the X5 is not easy because of the weight.

Never seen one? Will take a look later when Mrs CJ returns the X

If you think those are heavy and they are then try 35" Simex on a Jeep, usually changed in a riverbed or ditch when you shed a tyre. Getting the flat back inside the cab is the fun bit

Thats what a 4x4 should be doing not a lover of them but that looks great fun.

I found a load of M12 x1.5mm cap screws at work yesterday so I chopped the heads off and popped them in the lathe to brighten them up and it was done.

Tedster if I were you I would cut some of the thread off so it doesnt bottom out behind the hub and it will also make the wheel easier to slide, otherwise you may damage on the exposed thread.

Neat Tedster - You're ahead of what I was thinking about to avoid the welding step.

PVR - no tool in the X5 kit

why 2? I bought one (could not find it in the X5 toolkit either, maybe European standard).

I think someone on the forum said it was easier with 2 but I have found it is actually easier with one to get the wheel on the pin.
