Another citroen 'common fault'!!

After 3 EGR valves in 2 years the turbo has gone on my 5 year old citroen dispatch van. Citroen dealer diagnosed it and informed me that along with the common EGR fault this was the next common. £2003.00 quote :o
Managed to find a recon specialist but still £705.00. Why do modern vehicles still have 'common faults'

Ouch! :(

EGR valves and turbos seem to be service items now but at mammoth cost, so I've given up on diesels having had several as my family motors over the last few years (VW, Ford etc). I reckon squeezing some impressive outputs from modern diesels has left them less reliable and more expensive to repair than petrol. Shame, because I quite like the torque.

I think if this is the 1.6HDI this is the Peugeot/Citroen engine that was also used in the Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI etc.
It is known in the trade to be particularly problematic/unreliable engine.
The turbo is a major weak spot but you may want to consider your options as if memory serves the reason the turbo fails is partially blocked oil ways in the engine feeding it. Quite often after the turbo has gone/been replaced folks have major issues with the engine itself because the oil way issue persists.

Might be time to buy something else

Oh wait.... guess you havent heard of the n47

If you want to have a reliable diesel engine, buy a volvo 5 cylinder diesel
Probably one of the most bulletproof engines ever made.

Yup, and don't forget that the 1.6HDi is used in the BMW Mini too :)

My other car has a nice, reliable 2.4 5cyl Volvo diesel in it, that's approaching 250,000 miles, and still runs and drives like a 50k one!

BTW, the 1.6Hdi can be "saved" from further trouble by a full flush, and changing the oil feed strainer in the sump, and also removing the tiny gauze filter in the turbo oil feed, as they are what tends to get gunked up. I've done a few that have gone on to 200-300,000 miles without problems on taxi's I have settled out. The problem with that motor is that it runs HOT and the correct oil ain't cheap, so people skimp on it, and BOOM...

The place that did the repair were on about these exact issues. The took off the sump and cleaned it all out...replaced oil pick up pipe and filter...flushed the oil etc as well as cleaning everything associated with the oil. My fault entirely as it was about 5k over an oil service so just kept topping it up with (the correct) oil when it needed it. Lesson learned

When my last EGR went several specialists suggested an EGR delete package, basically a blanking plate and software preventing the EGR system from activating and blocking EGR engine lights. I've no experience of the results or whether it will be picked up at MOT time but 'they' say it works fine and won't fail an MOT. Anybody done this?

Good idea. I've heard of this but never looked into it. The first two EGR's were non-genuine but the third was genuine and touch wood is still okay....but there again it was 4 x the cost

I must have thrown about a dozen of the 1.6 Hdi engines in the bin..

They are very very s**t....

Which is why, when I bought my 10 plate Scudo last year I specifically went for a 2.0 120bhp one!

Is that a whole different engine?
I like the size of the van and it's practical having two side doors so I'd have another if the 2ltr is a more reliable unit

It's the Ford Duratorq unit.
