Android tablet recomendations

Need some advice for a cheap but good tablet computer for my dad

Hes got a mk1 google nexus 7 which he has had for a few years and as its now running slow he's wanting something a bit newer to replace it.

Max size 8"
Min Android 6.0
Absolute max price £140

That's about it spec wise so long as its a decent upgrade from his nexus.

I need it here in my hands by Friday at the latest so no ordering from China

I did order this https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06VT1F9HZ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 But it was a total con! has a mediatek processor not the advertised intel and also the photo has been edited so its a lot longer and thinner than it appears online more phone shaped than tablet

Any advice appreciated, only thing I can seem to find at the moment is the Lenovo Tab3 8 Inch but that really doesn't look like much of an upgrade from the 3+ year old nexus

Cheers

Eek, need it quick eh!

To be honest mate, i would probably go for the easy option and get the Amazon 8" Fire Tablet. Its £100. Tablets at these price points will are basically verging on disposable. If you need it quickly, i think Currys stock them ... whether in-store or not im not sure.... as you need it today.

Otherwise prime delivery would get it to you tomorrow.

(also, apologies, its mediatek processor also but i think it will be decent enough)

No actual problem with the mediatek was just annoyed at being conned..

I was gonna go fire but lack of play store is a problem as he's living in Tenerife and uses the certain apps to access UK based TV content he wouldn't normally be able to egt out there and he's not tech savvy enough to update side-loaded apps.

Definitely helped me out though as had a quick browse of the currys site and found this

Same price and same processor so ordered it

Cheeps bud!

The Fire is full of bloatware and Amazon stuff.

When I bought a tablet earlier this year I looked at the Fire and the Hudl 2 and ended up with the Hudl. Of course, with the Hudl, you get all the Tesco bloatware so it's a bit swings and roundabouts. I suspect you can still buy a new and sealed Hudl on eBay. That's where I got mine.

You can add the play store to an Amazon Fire in minutes. I've just got my little one the 8" HD kids version which comes with a rubber case, amazon kids subscription and more importantly a 2 year no questions guarantee against breakages.

Does what we need well which is play films and browse the internet, decent battery life and good storage options.

I think I would rather have a used iPad !
That's a personal choice and I'm sure you have reasons for sticking with an android device.

Interesting you say that as my dads current tablet is an Asus (google Nexus 7 mk1) and its still going strong after well over 3 years. In fact my own tablet is an Asus (although windows 10 not android) and after nearly 3 years of use on that (bought September 2014) its still going strong

A clear case of perceived quality and expectation. Being an old fart, l expect things to last a lot longer than three years. Younger folk however, appear to expect things to be replaced every 18 months? Interesting.

And when they do break, being an old fart I would expect to be able to take it apart and have a look inside!

l'm confused as the the expectancy of lasting longer, both are either near or over 3 years and both are still working

My personal tablet is an Asus model (now running Windows 10) I purchased it 3 years ago in September (running Windows 8 at the time) for £160 and it's still going strong! It came with a clip on keyboard so it is also an ultrabook/netbook whatever they are calling em now and also the full version of MS office installed free as part of the bundle. I actually dropped this on a tiled floor whilst I was on holiday smashed the screen, bought a new one and fitted it myself for a total cost of £25 (including the tape used to attach it) and its working better than new with the software update and I have no reason to believe it wouldn't work as good for another 2-3 years. This tablet I could sell now on ebay for £120 easy but maybe more so I'm looking at a total cost of ownership around £20 a year and that is with a new screen. Beat that with an apple?

So back to my dad's tablet.. His current Asus nexus 7 was purchased 3 and a half years ago for £120 and still works. With a factory reset it will be a fair bit faster than its running now too, in the condition he's kept it its probably on the higher end of £40-£50 on ebay so again TCO of around £20 pa although he'll probably just give it to my mum after the reset....

These 2 experiences with 2 Asus tablets made the one I just bought him for £100 an easy decision to go for

And yeah it was an easy fix on mine
