Android head unit install

Hi ladies and gents, reintroducing myself in here, it’s been ten years since I owned my last z4 and to celebrate that milestone I’ve bought another! Managed to get my hands on a 2003 2.5 se with only 36k miles on!
Unfortunately it’s not 2013 anymore so the first thing I wanted to do after a full service and check over was update the radio!
I went for this from Ali express! IMG_1083.png
Fitting was interesting but not overly difficult and I’m more than happy to Anwser any questions anyone has!
My dash now looks like this!

It’s all working and is a great update for anyone that likes modern head units

Did your dash already have the old nav? I have been considering doing this but I assumed I'd need to buy the nav dash which isn't too expensive but would be a big job!

Looks awesome, does it do android auto also?

Hi, didn’t already have the nav dash I cut the hole myself using the supplied template, wasn’t too difficult just a bit fiddly because of the windscreen.

Yes does also do android auto and pretty much anything else you can think of, got mine running n64 games / netflix etc

I took a few pics will post them now!

It’s fixed so just stays where it is, doesn’t really get in the way though and it’s all reachable whilst driving.

There’s one issue with the mounting brackets for the front not fitting due to the air vents but I left them out and fixed the unit with 3m double sided / rear brackets and that’s working fine

Looks awesome! You did a good job. Can you change the background on the home screen, how did you power it etc. Would you recommend that head unit?

Yeah would deff recommend! And it’s android so fully customisable. Only slight downside is that the audio runs through aux so could be crisper but unless you’ve got the volume all the way up it’s not that noticeable

I'm definitely doing this for the new year thanks! Where did you take the power from to power it? Is it an independent unit or do you have to connect your phone via Bluetooth for any of the wifi features like maps to work?

Power is one of the easiest things it jacks directly into the stereo and all runs through that, connect your phone through Bluetooth and you’re laughing!

Wow, that's class! When I get the money I will definitely be doing this, I need to get a new Bluetooth unit anyway that comes with a mic I can put behind the wheel or something right now I cant take Bluetooth calls its a nightmare

How do you connect the audio? I was looking at the Hifimax one and it looks like you have to use the external aux socket with a trailing wire which doesn't look great

Looks good, but I couldn't do this to my dash. I think the car is best as it is, mine looks factory throughout. I have added a well-hidden Bluetooth adaptor, that has voice control via Siri if I want it. I want as few distractions as possible when in my Z4.

Each to his own, but not for me I'm afraid!
