Lewis Hamilton has had his Mercedes road car impounded and is expected to be charged on a summons with improper use of a vehicle following an incident in Melbourne last night, Victoria police have confirmed.

Hamilton has apologised for "overexuberant" driving after being stopped by police. "This evening, I was driving in an overexuberant manner and, as a result, was stopped by the police," Hamilton, who is not expected to appear in court, said in a McLaren statement. "What I did was silly, and I want to apologise for it."

Hamilton was reportedly pulled over by police in Melbourne after doing a "burnout". According to ABC in Australia, the police say the McLaren driver was turning into Fitzroy Street at around 9.15pm when he "deliberately lost traction of his wheels".

The 25-year-old Hamilton was driving a silver Mercedes Benz sedan and police say they have impounded the vehicle. He will be summonsed for improper use of a motor vehicle.

Hamilton is in Melbourne for the second grand prix of the 2010 season and set the fastest lap time in the second free practice session this morning. His team-mate Jenson Button was second fastest while the former world champion Michael Schumacher finished fourth after a slow start."

:telloff:

"overexuberant" lol.

I remember many years ago (when 17) a mate trying to explain to a copper how his "foot slipped" and that's why his Nova had just launched itself from a junction in a cloud of tyre smoke. I think the 3 passengers struggling to keep a straight face weren't helping the story. :)

I did it once by accident, honest! I needed onto a main road and there wasn't much time to get into the lane so I stepped hard on it in my Z3, large amounts of smoke and noise followed but I got into the lane safely.  I was a little red faced . I must have had the traction control off...oops. My Z4, nope, never, it's been too icy most of the time. Maybe next week....

Hehe...

Back when I was 17, I discovered one particular corner that had the perfect surface and camber for going round sideways and as I was the first of my friends to be able to drive I used to show off Just a little...

Until one day it was more slippery than usual and off I went sliding sideways towards a brand spanking new car (still had the covers on the seats!). My back wheel caught on the curb and I stopped with my driver's door literally less than an inch from the front corner of the parked car (my side skirt was underneath the front of it! Luckily my beetle was significantly lowered!).

There was a big scary looking fella walking on the pavement with his 2/3 yr old daughter quite some way behind me (would not have done it if they were anywhere near the corner! I was irresponsible, but not a pr**k!). So he rushes over shouting and hollering at me grabbing me by the scruff of my shirt and about to punch me in the face shouting "YOU COULD HAVE KILLED MY DAUGHTER!"

my biggest mistake that day was replying "yeah, but I didn't!"

I've got more respect for Lewis Hamilton now that I had before - the guy's lightened up during the last season, and this just proves he's as human as most of us :)

But being a professional racing driver, he shouldn't have done it on public roads. He is still immature after years in F1 (he is not a teenager anymore).

I agree with having more respect for him now

To come out of an F1 car and still get a thrill sliding a AMG CLK or whatever it was is downright cool. 8)

I've read a few articles about this - has anyone read exactly which 2010 Merc he was in?

Trouble is from what I see Aus is not the place to do this. iirc they even banned the BMW advert for deliberately losing control of a car

"Losing control" is bulls**t. As someone who spends half the year driving on ice, sideways in a controlled skid and has done for the last 35 years I take offence at the B.S. Aussie rule.

But it's really not good PR for F1 drivers to stunt like that. Sets a bad example to us fogies, I mean youngsters who follow F1 a bit.

Personally I think it's a non story. Think of the antics the drivers used to get up to. They were anything but squeaky clean. More recently Kimi Raikkonen has been known to be a bit of a party animal but most of them are devoid of personality. That last real personality that I can remember was Eddie Irvine.

i think hes a cocky arse and if i was the judge id have made him appear in court on sunday
