And thats why they are called stealers!!!...

Second time I have had a to take my car to BMW and not an indy and once again they tried to rip me off.

Roof motor went on my 55 plate 3.0 so I saw on another thread that a forum member was quoted £590 all in from BMW Vines so I called them for a quote and they matched it. I then called BMW Styner High Wycombe as it was closer and they quoted a lot more but did say if I email them the other quote they will price match it. Send them the quote, they price matched so booked the car in for 4 days later as that was the earliest slot they had.

Dropped the car off at 8.30am they didn't have any BMW's or Mini's to loan me so they called Enterprise Cars and they turned up with a Peaugot 107!!!... Thought its only for a day so paid for the job in cash and left.

I was on my way back at 5pm to collect the car an got a call to say the car isn't ready. I said what do you mean not ready as you have had it all day for a job that was booked in advance and the job doesn't take all day. He then told me to be honest the job hasn't even been started. Kept my cool and said ok you are doing the job cheap so make sure it is done the following day. He said it will be and said they will also valet the car for free.

As I work in London, the next day I took a half day off work and whilst I was on the train back to Hertforshire to collect the rental and then pick up my car, I got a call to tell me the car still isn't ready. This time I freaked and said why not? He said that they had a lot of work in so it has not been finished. Told him not good enough as I am paying for their time which had been booked in advance and now I have taken a half day off work to collect the car and will have to take another half day tomorrow to collect again. They called back later to say they will take a further £120 off the bill and the car will definably be ready the next day.

The saga doesn't stop there...

The next day I get a call to say the weather strips on the car are perished so need to be replaced and also some of the cables are corroded and need to be replaced and that will cost an extra £180! The cabling I can understand but when I asked for the price to be broken down he said the cables are £4.00 each and there are two that are needed and the labour to fit them is £95 and the end caps are £40.50 each.

The cabling may have needed changing but when I question £95 labour he said that is what the charge is so I thought I'm getting the job done cheap so take that off what you owe me but explain how the weather seal can be perished? He then came back to say they are not perished but damaged and do I know what part he is talking about? I said yes I do know what part you are talking about (the rubber caps at the top of the door) and the only way they can be damage is if they were ripped off so I want to speak with the workshop manager.

The workshop manager then called to apologise for them telling me the part is damaged as it is not damaged, however it will need to be replaced as it will not fit back correctly so the top part will not be weather tight. I asked for his email address and emailed him over the removal and refit pictorial from Shipkiller's site and called him back asking him to look at the picture on the last page and is it the two bits of double sided tape on the rubber seal that he is talking about.

To my amazement he replied yes but they have not got the correct double sided tape so in order to finish the job they will need to put on new rubber seals which come with their own double sided tape attached...WTF!!!

So basically I said what your telling me is as you do not have double sided tape in the workshop or as you stated "the tape we have supplied by BMW is too thick", you want to charge me and extra £81.00 for parts I don't need!!!

Cut a long story short - I gave the manager a peace of my mind when collecting the car in front of other customers for attempting to rip me off and then I even had to do my own valet the next day as the job they did was rubbish.

(I used Meguires Clay Bar and Ultimate Liquid Wax)

And that was my latest episode with a BMW Stealer.

Gosh, sorry to hear about your experience. What a nightmare, why can't people just do their job properly and at least honestly.

At least you gave them a piece of your mind and you've done a splendid job on the car - looks gorgeous, especially with the clouds reflecting on the window.

Good for you not taking any crap from them
I had a similar conversation with Berry Chiswick when they broke my window regulator whilst the car was in their workshop for something else. They delivered the car back to me without telling me they'd done it with the window stuck halfway down. The glass was covered in greasy fingerprints where they'd tried to pull the glass out of the door. Strangely, they collected the car from my home, replaced the regulator for free and dropped it back to me after my explosive rant about their incompetence
That was the last time I used a stealer...

Thanks Vanilla - Hopefully the other customers double checked their invoices after I left.

First rip off was when a neighbour had reversed into my car and cracked both kidney gills. I fully inspected the front (including putting my hand behind the bumper) and there was no other damage.

Dropped it off to BMW and they sent a quote including a front bumper respray stating it had deep scratches. As I wasn't paying and the bottom did have curb marks, I said go ahead. When I looked at the quote properly, it also had a £25 charge for a new BMW badge with 1 Unit labour charge for installing it so I queried that.

The reply was as they are taken off, the clips can SOMETIMES break so that is why I am being charged for a new one. My answer was "So you guys can look into the future and you know this one is going to break as you take it off then?" - Line went quiet and then they said they will waive that charge!

Then the next day they called to say when they took the bumper off they noticed that the back is cracked so will need to be replaced. Told them to stop miking the job and just get on with what has been agreed... Got the car back the following day after paying £650 for what was just a job for 2 kidney grills initially.

Forget being overcharged as that is the norm... Anyone else caught them out blatantly trying to rip you off thinking you haven't a clue what the job actually should entail?

Haven't had the chance to properly look around the forum yet. Is there a section where people can geographically list independent BMW specialists that they can recommend?

Having owned a Mercedes previously the forum I used there promoted specialists very well so people don't have to suffer inept main dealerships.

dlp, http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=4 dealer recommendations & feedback.

Billy, I'm sorry to hear about your experiences but not surprised at all. I think most of us have a stealer story

it amazes me how people think having full bmw service history actually means the car has been treated better. in most cases, dealers don't do half the job that a good independent does, because they don't need to worry about repeat custom.

same with getting work done. don't assume they'll always do the job correctly.
