AMG is to Mercedes what ??? is to BMW

Hi,

One of the main reasons for buying an E89 was to get a new enough car that was still within warranty. I'm planning on extending the warranty when it runs out to keep that peace of mind going forward.

That said, I would like to lower the car a bit and also get some more power out of it (35i).

Are there any tuners that are affiliated with BMW (like AMG) and would therefore not invalidate the warranty with their upgrades? I'm thinking Hartge and Alpina, but i can't figure out how close the relationship is.

Thanks

Pav

I'd have thought Alpina has the closest relationship given they delivered the Alpina Roadster S variant of the pre-facelift Z4, and seem to do the same for most BMW models - though I am not an expert.

AC Schnitzer is another one to consider - they just completed a modified sdrive 2.8i - thread on here somewhere but no time to search :D

Alpina is a car maker in its own right, Hartge/AC Schnitzer are "just" after-market tuners. That's why a BMW Alpina Roadster S is called out as a PLG on road tax, as its a low volume production run. And the relationship with BMW is very tight, hence they are called BMW Alpina, not just Alpina.

:D of course, there are no plans for an E89 Alpina version, so if it's E89 customisation you are looking for, you can only retro-fit some after market parts (and possibly engine tuning components) to the stock version - with all its incumbant warranty issues. Or go with a customised version and rely on the customiser's warranty (not sure of the warranty the AC Schnitzer version on this forum has...)

Alpina seem to be concentrating on the 3 and 5 series cars at present. Shame really, as a 3.5+ Alpina E89 version would have been very tempting...

Warranty and modifications rarely go hand in hand so your better off making enquiries with your dealership and the tuning companies to ensure your fully informed regarding the potential risks should the components fail.

AC-Schnitzer components I believe are honoured by BMW but then again your limited to their components. The engine tuning they offer for the 35i is expensive, other tuning companies provide just as rigorously tested products cheaper. Their springs are also in a similar bracket. I bought an Eisenmann exhaust system for my previous BM and it wasnt covered under the warranty but then again it was much better quality than the BMW OEM exhaust system so I wasnt too worried.

I guess it depends how much your planning to spend and whether you can financially digest any issues that occur which may not be warranty covered. If you can bolt on as much as you want :)

I think I remember reading somewhere that the Hartge tuning parts supplied by Birds BMW retained a full BMW warranty... don't know if that helps...

Dinan will repair any damage caused by their upgrades during the factory warranty period. Some BMW dealers in the US are also Dinan dealers. Warranty repairs at those dealerships are transparent. The dealer figures out who to send the bill to.

If you look at the brochures, MB sells AMG like BMW sells ///M.
