Amber lights either side of courtesy light switch

As the title suggests really
When switching on the interior light, 2 small amber lights showed up on my hand.
They are either side of the centre switch and don't provide any illumination and seem to be permanently on
(certainly in the dark :D )

Anyone know what they are for? - can't find anything about them in the handbook
Only had the car for 2 years - just wonder if I'm missing out on something :)

My coupe has them too. I believe that they are a type of ambient light. My wife's focus has these too in the same colour. Bit of mood lighting when driving

OK, cheers
Guess you could say the idea failed if it took me 2 years to notice :D

The two small LED lights cast a pale pool of orange light down on to the gearstick area. You only really notice it if you are in pitch dark away from street lighting. My E39 530i Sport had them also.

This. BMW been doing it for years. It illuminated the area around the gear lever.
