Morning
I have had 2 alternator failures in my Caterham one last Sunday on the National meet made it home ok only had issues 1/2 mile from home in the form of miss fires
The second on a round trip of 60 miles
The feeling I have is it was buzzed by high RPM 8,100rpm
Now there is a guy on the Caterham group that is adamant it is not alternator over speed and to do with the wiring
My car has a Stack dash board so has no red ignition light fitted he is saying it is something to do with what Caterham did to replicate the red light under the dash but it is a birds next of wire under there and not easy to get to
Having searched the web for how it works how it is wired etc my alternator has 2 connections on the back of it a feed from the battery and a 12v ignition feed this is the one that may have the red light in the circuit or not
A few drawings and you tube videos have a 3rd connection I do not have this
There is an internal to the unit or bolted to it and covered with a plastic cover a voltage regulator, which I think has failed due to high rpm
If it is not the high rpm what else could make the alternator fail
I have the original one it is dated 2022 so not old and it is in new condition if you where to look at it
All the earth cables look to be in good condition
The thing I maybe should do next is check continuity of the 12v ignition feed to the alternator it does magnetise the alternator shaft with the ignition on but could be intermittent but why would it start working straight after a new alternator is fitted
Anyone experienced in this older type of alternator set up and could help out with what else to check
Thanks
