Alloy Wheel Questions

Hi Guys,

Im looking at getting new tyres soon and have been thinking maybe of changing the alloys at the same time but I have a few questions:

My standard Alloys are Elipsoids (i think) and are staggered so front tyres are 225/40/18 and rears are 255/35/18 and I am wondering if my car is set up for this so having 225 all round would look odd and not work with my car?

Also what is the stud diameter as I have been looking at maybe the M6 style or CSL style as they both look nice options.

Also my car seems to have the M sport suspension fitted so will this make any difference?
 
As long as the BMW alloys are reasonably up to date the bolt P.C.D. Will be the same, but you need to ensure the difference in offset is around 5.0 mm else you will need to fit spacers. If you buy aftermarket then just ensure that they can be fitted, rimstyle and alike you can specify the make of car when you search

Unless you drive an M or have an 3.5 e89 you don't have to run a staggered set up 225's all round s okay and it helps reduce road noise.
 
Thanks :) nope not an M so I dont really need staggered then? Would also mean new tyres are cheaper too as at the moment they are very pricey on the rears!
 
If you drive enthusiastically, you'll get better grip on the rears with 255/35s vs 225/40. But I know what you mean, rear tyres aren't cheap

Saying that... the standard wheel/tyre on the 3.0i (unless the buyer spec'd 18s) was 225/40 17 8J rims
 
Also lack of curb protection with 225 on a 8.5 rim.

I almost got 225 all around for my winters... But opted for 255 in the end.

Why the oh dear!!

My old 2.5Si was pretty poor in the wet with 255's on the rear, my 3.0 e89 with 225's on the rear has more grip when wet or damp and as for tyre noise :D

Yea well im really not too sure what to do because the previous owner kerbed the alloys pretty badly on all of them so I was looking and there are a few different options but just was curious if the car was supposed to have the staggered for the looks and handling.

I keep getting problems with my runflats bulging from the side wall so was wondering if non runflats would be better? The hard suspension and low profile meant have needed a couple of new tyres because of this problem :(
 
Sorry just to clear this up I was meaning changing the alloys and them being the same size all round and therefore having the same size tyres not narrower tyres on the Elipsoids :)
 
A square set-up would work, and save you in tyre costs, but from an aesthetic point of view I've always thought the standard rears weren't wide enough on a zed, never mind anything narrower.
 
interesting to see the newer model has narrower wheels on the rear. makes you wonder if there is much need for the 255/35 as the difference in price for falken 452's moving to 225/40 is over 50 quid a tyre

the wider tyre question often springs up on westys. usually its on a 15" rim and its should i get a 215 or 205 instead of a 195 wide tyre and the genereal consensus is no there isnt much point.
