After a compressor for my 2005 3.0 Z4 if anyone has a working one available?

Trying to get a new one is proving difficult :|

Just interested why you need a new one? They are mechanically extremely reliable and hard-wearing.

Is the clutch not a separate part? Always used to be, in the 'good old days'. The clutch is an electro-magnet. Seems a bit extreme to junk a whole compressor because of a faulty magnet. :?

You have to unbolt the compressor before you can do anything.
Why not just bolt another one on straight away? After that you have a broken compressor that you may be able to fix. In the meantime you have a fully functioning car.

Ah OK. In the days when I used to do this stuff (often), you could take the auxilliary belt off and release one bolt on the front of the clutch and remove it with the electrics still attached. Unplug the connector and then swap for a good one.
Progress, eh??

I don't know whether the solenoid and clutch is replaceable but as mentioned you can't do anything without removing the compressor. It was working a week ago but not now, a/c off refrigerant pressure is good so it's not leaked anything. Replacement compressor is the only solution really

Just make sure the system is empty of gas before swapping out.

I have a good relationship with the manager of my local tyre place......he empties the gas before I work on a car and puts my gas back for some beer money

See, instead of being so supercilious about it, why did you not try to be helpful and offer the benefit of your previous experience? It could be that your knowledge applies equally to these compressors and you could have advised us to try this first.
I still have the replacement compressor on the bench so I will now investigate to see if this can be done.
If it can then thank you for suggesting it and I will be sure to publicise it on the forum.

Indeed! It now carries a prison sentence for 'knowingly releasing CFCs or HCFCs into the atmosphere'.

Oh hang on I retract that knowledge for fear of being supercillious! :D

I would never do anything like that

I love polar bears and penguins

As a follow up to this: I just took a look at the spare compressor and yes there was a torx bolt in the middle.
Try to undo it and the whole inner section of the pulley/clutch pack just spins.
Only way I could get it undone was to hold the outer edge of the front section in a vice. So that would be a challenge in situ.
Once the bolt was out I tried to pull the clutch assembly free. No dice. Nothing moving at all, and as I am intending to fit this I didn't want to mess it up.
So no real conclusion I'm afraid.
Yes it looks as though it should be possible. But still fitted? Not too sure. Will it actually come apart? Certainly not without a fair degree of 'gorilla-ing'.
So my plan now is to swap the whole thing over then experiment more on the old one which I know is knackered before I start.
Sorry [ref]pilch[/ref], I was hoping to be able to give more help than that. If you do yours before I do mine then maybe you could have a play with your old one?

I too had a look underneath yesterday and that centre torx bolt is tight!!

My plan is to disassemble it once out as it doesn't matter I break it  I always like to find out what problems are and if they can be fixed. Couple weeks back I replaced a gearbox in a mate's Vectra as his had blown a hole in the diff housing :o Once out I just had to pull it apart to find the cause which turned out to be a failed output shaft bearing that set off a chain reaction of destruction
