Air filters (panel)

I have searched and searched but only found one decent thred. who on here has replaced there panel filter for a k&n or pipercross panel filters? does it make a difference in noise on acceleration (i.e more beefy) or is it just an silly mod?
ive noticed this one on the bay............ http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pipercross-Air-Filter-BMW-Z4-E85-3-0-2003-06-PP1221-/250646445600

I dont know about the panel bud I would not reccomend doing it... They say that it filters everything but small particles actually do pass - my intake was messy as hell, thank god the MAF is ok... The OEM airbox with OEM filter is very large, thus compensating the "paper" technology... Save your money and buy a stubby antenna instead, not worth it IMHO. I had the cone KN and it did make a nice growl thoug... :)

i was thinking about this too. i put a K&N on my old car (400HP turbo Skyline) and it gave it a very nice growl. :driving:
I wanna change the air Filter on my Z4 for something a little meaner sounding with better air flow, but the posts on here about K&N have made me reconsider

so if anyone here has added a better sounding/quality panel or pod filter would definitely like to hear about it...

chrisZ4 3.0 have you had a look at the sound generator mod? it adds a nice bit of noise to the car

Hotride, why the hell did you get rid of the skyline????? :o Id trade you anytime :D
chrisZ4 3.0, if you have a 2.5i or less then get the sound generator and remove the foam inside it, it will make your car growl like a tiger with a thumb stuck in his rectum. As for the airbox, it goes through the front mask to get a "ram air" effect and take only cold outside air, by drilling it you would suck some of the hot air inside the engine compartment possibly reducing your output by 0,5 hp :D

Hotride, chrisZ4 3.0, what about this????

lol czechT, i'm in Australia could be a hard swap, plus the skyline is a bit of a clit car over here, every ____ has one.
prefer the handling and styling of the Z4 any day, skyline might be considerably louder n faster but i do like having a licence

as for the air intake, it does look pretty unusual but i just want a simple replacement filter, if i start adding bits to the engine i wont stop lol

Hotride, haha was it a 33 or a 34? Its a very rare piece of equipment here... Never actually saw one personally :D Id take it in a sec :P I understand, mods are like potato chips, you can never have just one. :) I cant hoever reccomend the filter on the account of the engine intake internals, might work a while but the MAF could go overtime :)

well i have had my z4 for 2 months now so far iv'e done: MFSW, stubby, painted the calipers, new kidneys, added chrome exhaust tips, bought personalised plates, clear light package (back and sides) done the sound gen mod and CDV and full circle brakes are happening this weekend. so its worse then chips for me its more like heroin :headbang: lol. as for the air intake im sure it will happen eventually

my old ride was a R33, white with custom body kit and blue pearl (much more customized then my Z is currently), since you laughed at my joke i suppose i could put sumthin up for your viewing pleasure 8) .

i retrimmed the interior in carbon and chrome/steel as much as possible

not exactly z4 discussion, but hopefully no one will notice...

My mate drives an R33 too (GTR with 450bhp on 'normal' mode and close to 600bhp on 'mental' mode) - and it's one of the few that can last a whole day at the 'Ring without breaking something - although getting into multi-storey car parks is impossible due to his carbon splitter that stick out about 6 foot :P

And before anyone recognises the 'budget' tyres on the front of my old e34 M5, then I know, but I was doing an extended road test of them for Pistonheads.

Airbox holes will lose some power through heat-soak and the non ram-air effect of the inlet pipe but will be louder. I wouldnt have thought an oiled cotton PF will make much difference to noise (as the airbox itself acts as a silencer) and is likely to affect your MAF after a while.

Why not play around with the exhaust end and remove sound generator foam (gives much more internal induction noise).

I've installed the K&N panel in mine, I also removed one of the foam from the sound generator so couldnt say how much difference in noise level the filter made :)

I had a K&N panel filter on mine. I only got it because my friends run Performance Direct in Barnsley so it was very cheap ;)
I have to say though that it made no difference whatsoever, so I just went back to the OEM one. I wouldn't bother.

So did u find it gave more of a growl on acceleration? Where is the sound generator located? In the air box itself?

chrisZ4 3.0, just remove the damn foam from the sound generator dammit :D No benefit with aftermarket filters of anytype whatsoever, except for GruppeM, which goes for serious cash :)
