Air Conditioning Stopped Working

My air conditioning stopped working a couple of weeks ago. It’s always the way when you have weather when you actually need it! I almost cooked on my way home last night.

I’ve tried getting it checked for leaks, serviced and checked the fuses but it’s still not working :(

Can anyone suggest anything to try before taking it to a garage?

Is your air con and circulation fan working fine on all speeds or does the fan only runs on slow speed?

Sorry my post did lack a little detail.

The blowers are fine and can be turned up and down, the air con light comes on when I press the button just no cool air comes out.

When the AC guy measured the temp of the air coming out the vents with it set as low as possible it was 31.7 deg.

Can you hear the clutch engage and the compressor spin up when you switch on aircon?

I've just been out and tried but I'm not 100% I'd know what it sounds like.

I got an electronic whirring noise from behind where the switch is but nothing else.

Get someone else to sit in the car and switch it on and off. You'll hear a distinct clunk as it engages, then if working, the engine will slow slightly as it starts to compress gas.
By bet is the clutch is not operating, due to lack of power to it or broken unit

Thanks I'll give that a go but I'm fairly certain it's not doing that :(

Sounds like a garage job then and a waste of money getting it re-gassed.

If the compressor is not running then it needs fixing. If it's re gassed and later has to come out, all you'll do is have to drain it off, fix the fault and re-gas.

I got it booked in and they confirmed it was the compressor, thanks for your help guys.

I sourced a second hand compressor as the BMW part was way too much! They also said they needed to order two bolts which cost about a fiver. I didn't see this as a problem but they have taken two weeks to come in and they still aren't here!

Has anyone got any idea what these two bolts are and where I can source them myself?

This weather is driving me nuts with no AC :(

Bringing an old post back.

I am having the same problem as Z4 Coupe had. My compressor is not engaging. I have checked the fuses in my glove box for the AC and they are both fine. I had the AC gas checked by Halfords yesterday. They said there were no leaks and that the gas was within the correct pressure range.

However, before i get it booked in i would like to check the AC relay switch or the evaporator temperature regulator relay switch, as i have read different things on the internet!

However, i cannot find a diagram anywhere locating where i could find this?

Could anybody shed some light on this matter please?

By the way it is for an E86/ E85 cheers

Did a quick search found the post on the transport mode, i dont think mine is in transport mode as everything else works i.e heated rear screen etc, just the ac no powering up. All lights come on etc just not engaging on the compressor side.

Anyone out there know where the relays switches are for these under the bonnet???

Thanks tonyz4c seems fairly do able! Hopefully it is that simple. Any ideas of price for a replacement final stage replace unit before i ring the dealers to order one?

Many thanks again
