Air Con issues

No smells at all.
Depends what the smell is like but I'd suggests that is more likely due to the cabin filter. Often forgotten and dirty/clogged up.
 
That would explain why the system still tried to operate. With my former 2003 z4 my air con stopped all together. Luckily it was just the low pressure switch kicking in as the gas was so low. I presume it shuts off the system to protect the compressor.
