Hi all,soz for sounding stupid but when i read about AG roof cleaner/proofer products beading water on the roof, when on other posts ive read the roof is meant to be permeable-isnt this contradicting each other?

It's a good point. From the posts you'll have no doubt seen that the roof (UK) is multi layer and the top is indeed permeable with inner layer being the waterproof one.

Applying almost anything to protect the fibres will I'm sure cause beading to some extent as the water won't penetrate the fibres, however I feel the biggest issue is when the roof is sealed with something that makes the fabric non permeable. I've seen people using Fabsil designed for canvas tents and similar. Trick I think is to clean the fabric then protect the fibres from dirt and debris getting in, which when flexed damages the fibres. Water will sort itself out.

I'd simply go with one of the top 2 part (cleaner and treatment) makes, specific to the roof type - BMW own, Ragtopp, etc.

As CJ says the outer layer is permeable
If you browse the AG site their 2 part kit the description includes ...reproofing
I use the BMW kit as a result :)
