Aftermarket sat nav - TomTom One any good?

I'm thinking about upgrading my Garmin Streetpilot i3 sat nav (about 4 years old, not even a touchscreen) with something new.

Noticed that Amazon are doing the TomTom One with European mapping for the same price as UK mapping (saving a bit of money). Would be useful for me as I'm off on a European tour this year :). I don't use a sat nav that often so not keen to spend lots on one, but when I do use one, it's very useful.

I don't know much about sat navs - any advice much appreciated. Is TomTom better than Garmin/the competition or much iof a sameness?

Cheers

I have had tomtom on pda's now i use a tt540 i think they are really easy to use and reliable most people i know have tt as their sat nav

I have had one for a couple of years does the job very well, just doesnt have any features for handfree or MP3 etc, which I didnt want anyway.

Tom toms are the best IMHO.

<shameless plug>
my tomtom go 530 is on eBay at the moment, currently at £95.

It really is as new as I bought it in jan two weeks before I go the z4, hence I only used it 3 times!

I might put a link up to it later in a seperate post in case anyone is interested :)

Having used a few different brands of Sat Nav, I have aways thought TT are the easiest to use have the clearest maps for the price.

A TTOne is all most people will ever need.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 255W with European mapping and have used it France, Italy & Poland without any problems, other than the occaisional road layout change easily rectified with updated downloads from their website (at a cost) plus IMO it looks better than a TomTom and has a bigger screen.

I have a TomTom One V4, very pleased with it except the rubber sucker doesnt seem to hold it very well on the windscreen, keeps falling off! :headbang:

Like the touch screen operation, and safety camera detector.

I have the original TomTom ONE and wouldnt go out without it  it has been great.

My windscreen sucker broke though so I now have a vent mount :)

cant compare with any others though as Ive only ever used the TomTom...

yeah the tom tom one is good, i recently upgraded from the v1 one to a 530, was £200 off amazon and came with a free 2 year map updated voucher, its much improved and also works as a handsfree with my iphone so its pretty much perfect for me.

ive only used tomtom but its never let me down.

Cheers folks. Think I might get one ordered, especially as the wife says she'll split the cost with me as long as she can borrow it occasionally (might be difficult one I hide it in the Z4...).

Map updates on TomTom - any idea on cost?

about £40 a pop. you can also subscribe to an update service which gives you (I think) 4 updates a year...

Thanks, that's cheaper than Garmin quoted me for mine (I currently get a message everytime I start mine up saying my maps are over 12 months out of date...).

I have a Garmin and love it. Very accurate. As I recall, consumer reports did a testing and the TomTom one and Garmin came out on top.
