Been offered a K&N induction system with cleaning kit, came off a 3 series, Guy reckons it will fit my 2.5 with only a slight mod required to the heat shield, he had it on his 3 series for 6K miles.
Wants £75 for it.......

Will it fit and is it worth the money, any benifit in fitting one ??

Do people still fit K&Ns? Personally, I would avoid it like the plague. They are for 1.0 Micras/Clios etc.

Appreciate your opinion M8

But my question was,
Will it fit and is it worth the money, any benifit in fitting one ??

Yes, and no. Only benefit will be increased intake noise.

I take it as you're mentioning modification to stuff, you don't mean a panel filter, but a cone filter or similar. Don't bother. Heat soak will REDUCE your power, and potentially make it sound worse.

Unless the heat shield can block off all the nasty hot air entering your intake, I would keep clear. Most likely to result in slight loss of power.

Engines like lost of cold dense air to make the combustion bang bigger (bit of a mouthful  ).

I suspect as the device is from a 3 series, it will not fit perfectly, and thus let in lots of hot engine bay air :(

I'd stick with standard, or go for a proper cold air induction (not sure of the best makes for Z4 as I'm still a relative newbie for Zeds  )

Nearly got caught in the shiney thing symdrome a little while ago and almost bought the AFE Induction kit, it's the one and only time I have managed to avoid Z4-itis, it was hard and the side effects of the tablets, well lets just not got there :D

The only advice I can you mate is bike related but may well carry over.
I had a Dynojet Kit fitted to a Kawasaki ZXR750L1 years ago and asked the guy who was fitting it (the now defunct Ascot House Racing) if it was worth fitting a K&N in place of the stock panel filter, he showed me a replacement panel K&N the actual size of the opening was smaller than the OEM one it only allowed more air flow because the filter was not as fine so stuff the normal filter trapped passed straight through the K&N.

I'm not saying for one minute that this is the same, but you also need to check whether it's a dry filter or a wet filter and just what the mods required are bearing in mind I'm away till christmas :poke: , though we are in Kennoway on Sunday.
At £75 it's possibly worth a punt depending on the level of modification required.

Pawnsacrifice fitted the AFE one to his and took it off again it created or at least exagerated a strange noise (can't remember what he called it off hand) as others have said don't think it will do much for the performance of the engine but will change the induction noise.

Yours sitting firmly on the fence.

PS good job they were not speed cameras coming back Portpatrick after reading about your insurance issues.

Thanks guys,
General Consensus is a no to the worth it question and no benifit to fitting it,,,
Thats good enough for me, think I will give this Z4-itis chapter a miss then.

Richard, Yeah I know, so Glad they weren't speed cameras as well otherwise we were both in the smelly stuff

My only experience was many, many years ago when I bought my EP3 Civic Type R new on an 03 plate, amongst many other things I fitted an AEM CAI which sat almost in the wheel arch instead of in the engine bay.

IMO it was well worth the money as the sound from 6k revs to 8.5k was insane and addictive.

My Type R made 245bhp on a dastek dyno, as I say, many other modifications including cams, kpro ecu etc etc were made, I would say that the AEM certainly did not reduce power but increased it somewhat.

In conclusion if you can get a decent heatshield and run some form of a cold air intake from behind the grille to the filter then I'd say you would be alright, probably no increases in power but almost certainly an increase in noise and for the better, failing that shell out some big money and get a Gruppe M

Mornin' chaps,

I know this is going to sound stupid, but please humour me!

With the 'wet' aftermarket filters, don't they have to be kept 'wet' with some sort of oil, which has a habit of fouling up the wire in the MAF?

I am sure I read that somewhere but I don't know how true/relevant it is...

I've read that too Dev. Only on the internet though, so it may not be true! I personally wouldn't risk it - the air filter in the M is fine, which I believe is well proven, too.

Just started running a K&N replacement filter... have to say can't really tell that there's any difference, though as mentioned above, it's critical to get cold dense air into the system, so unless these open cone filters are properly heat shielded you could actually get less, not more

I've been through the same thought process Nosa and decided against changing from the stock filter. I'd even gone as far as arranging for it to be declared on my insurance but in the end didn't buy.

As others says there's a high chance of it actually reducing power via heatsoak within the engine bay. Also the potential problem of wet filters affecting the MAF sensor. And then there's the "ghost whistle" that Pawnsacrifice experienced with his AFE. They CAN sound sh*t hot, but then they can also sound just plain sh*t...
