Advice please

If the car is on the flat I’d leave the handbrake off simply to avoid the handbrake ECU having to monitor the brakes and maybe avoid a rear brake ECU meltdown…if it’s an early E89…

Maybe charge the battery for paranoid good measure?

My E89 often sits in the garage for 3 or 4 weeks at a time with the handbrake on and I’ve never experienced any issues with the car.

Your car is a late model where the rear brake ECU problem has been fixed…I believe the OP is a much earlier car..hence my comments..

I'd just leave it in Park as I can't see what applying the handbrake would achieve that Park won't.

I've had a few BMWs that suffered from sticking brakes shoes after being parked for a while with the handbrake on, especially in damp weather. Including my current Z4, so I just leave it in gear with the handbrake off!

Thanks for the update, everydays a school day!

Away on my holidays tomorrow and was wondering as to leave the handbrake on for the next 10 days, or just leave the car in 'P'.

Hi mate,
I'd leave it in gear, handbrake off as suggested(unless it's not on flat/level ground). I always do this with my z and other cars, saves any sticking on issues.

How do you leave the handbrake off on a manual E89?

It seems to put itself on automatically after the ignition has been off for a short period…

Mine doesn't (2013 LCI). I know because I checked that it doesn't when changing rear brakes, as that would be a pain and have to be done with a coding tool.
