Advice on Selling, please!

Hi

For a variety of reasons I've, reluctantly, decided to put the zed up for sale. It's been on Pistonheads, Gumtree and Ebay since the weekend:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300616644236?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649

So far I've only had one email and that was from someone who wanted to buy the hard top only. Incidentally, I'm hanging on to that for the time being on the basis that it might just help sell the car.

I've priced it in line with the What Car used car value calculator, which takes into account the low mileage etc. But maybe I'm way off(?)

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Cheers

Tony

I have been trying to sell mine for months autotrader and pistonheads, no such luck - I'm saving it until spring :)

I think the mileage is good although for £1000 cheaper or more you can get a 2.5 or 3.0 at similar mpg!! So look at your competition and that's why you prob haven't sold, mine didn't sell at £6750 and that's a 3.0 with full bm history but with 85k on clock

Still there are a lot for sale at silly prices at the moment which isn't very good for me and you :(

Price guides are just that and at the moment I'd say these cars are selling at under guide or looked at another way guide is behind market. Time of year, economic climate, etc.

I agree with Leon that oyu can pick up a 3.0 for that money, so you have to either drop the price or wait until Spring

One suggestion to take or leave is I feel you're 'please note' comments on the add will put people off - not very welcoming.

Agree with this. I also don't think anyone would expect an unaccompanied test drive from a private sale anyway!

Ok, point taken about the 'Please note' bit - I was just trying to put off chancers having read a lot of warnings about some of the scams people try, plus the experiences of a friend who sold a car through Ebay last year. He was besieged by 'dealers' making totally bonkers offers (£500 for a car worth £12,000!). I'll probably revise the listing in the next day or so, based on this feedback.

Thanks for your comments!

Hi there

Got to be honest Photos are a bit uninspiring - there is a lot of competition around so take it the local park beauty spot and get some photos taken there . the current ones probably does not do the car justice.

As others have said the please note needs to be removed or rephrased.

Thanks for the suggestions

I'm revising the ad as I write (although new photos might need to wait until there's some decent weather in Lincoln) :D

Cheers

Just the worst time of year to put a roadster up for sale.....

My advice would be (i) keep it till spring and remarket it then, (ii) sell the top NOW and trouser an easy grand or so, less fees (it won't be of much interest to a spring buyer and you WON'T get anywhere near a grand for it anyway, neither is its presence or absence going to significantly influence the sale IMHO).

I also suspect the price of a 3.0 is more depressed because of overall running costs so I wouldn't make too close a comparison.

Hugely overpriced. I sold my 3 litre SE with lots of options, Z4M wheels, perfect history, etc. for £7400 recently.

I must admit I would be put off from buying a car when it comes across that it was only bought for the summer and no money has been spent on maintenance during that time. The things you don't mention are often as important as the things you do i.e. how long to the next service and the condition of the tyres. By not mentioning those facts, the implication is the next buyer is soon going to have to fork out for a service and new tyres. Potential buyer will certainly be considering imminent running costs in their calculations. I wouldn't mention that you only bought it in January - it adds nothing to the value of the car or the advert in general.

Also as has already been mentioned, cash in on the hard top. From my experience with Lotuses, you will definitely get more for the hard top by selling it separately than keeping it with the car.

It's a difficult time to sell a roadster - stick with it or wait till the spring - either way it's a hard fact of life but you will end up reducing your price.

Thanks, again, for these responses. They all make sense, especially selling the hard top separately - that was always the plan, really. I just thought it might just tip the balance in favour of this car, if someone was comparing it against others. However, it doesn't seem to be making any difference. Can't agree about the price of it in relation to a 3.0, though. A lot of people are put off of the bigger engines for all sorts of reasons and you can see it reflected in the prices of all 'big' cars. Only real enthusisasts are seduced by extra pots and are willing to pay to run them.

As I'm keen to shift the car, I'll persevere for the duration of the adverts. But re-advertising in the Spring does seem the way to go.

Cheers

I've bought and sold a bit in the past, looking at similar cars listed for sale yours looks well priced FOR A 2.0.

I'm +1 for Lacroupade's comments about 2.0 vs 3.0 prices they are a slightly different market and the 2.0 has some advantages currently i.e. fuel, servicing and tax etc.

I would add that last week my local auctions had two similar 2.0 models and a later 2.5. BCA have 28 Z4 listed nationally, most being 2.0L so it's clear that there are a lot around in the trade at the moment. I'm with Lacroupade again on this one, flog the top and wait for spring or you will be paying someone to take it away.
