Have you got one?

Yes. Have had the same or similar on a few different cars. Unscrew the green bit and take it with you and the electric supply is cut. The small fused wire still supplies enough current for the clock etc to run.

I have found the following a good deterrent from unwanted people on my drive:

Although I think she would guard her ball rather than the car!

I have one of these on my Caterham - fitted as standard to most cars.

How about one of these on the starter motor supply (might have to change one lead for a longer one) and mounted in the foot well. They just turn and the key pulls out - far quicker than the type fitted to the battery and all the electrical stuff continues to work.

If they really want your car, they'll probably take the keys from you at knifepoint in your living room. Thankfully unlikely with an old Zed though.

A lot of time nowadays, car theft will also involve the crim breaking into your house to get at your keys. So keeping your keys somewhere that's not immediately obvious is the first step. Next, I'd look into high security locks and door handles for your house. You can often fit these yourself with a bit of research, and they remove an easy, silent way to break into your home. Sure, they can still smash a window, but you're going to hear that.

Finally, as above, getting a large dog (or just any dog that's going to bark, really) is probably the best theft deterrent you can have.
