Hi all,

I was hoping you guys in your infinite wisdom could suggest some pointers to an issue with my mums car.

She has an e90 330d, 6 years old with under 20k miles.

2 weeks ago the car failed to start first time, since then nearly everytime it starts when cold, but after that will take 2 or 3 goes before it starts.

My dad called the RAC one time and the guy said he has seen it before its one of the injectors thats has gone, and he said when another one goes out of 4 are gone it will never start (i would have though it would have 6 being a 6 cyclinder :? )

Its at the dealership today for them to diagnose the problem (they charged £100 for the privilege) and they rang today and said they cant find the fault :o They tested the injectors and ran all the diagnosis but they dont know what is wrong... Even though when they tried to start it it took 5 attempts, so they are keeping it overnight to run more tests.

The symptoms are the lights come on, but the engine fails to turn over... As if the battery needs a charge.

The battery was tested and its ok.

I've spent the afternoon googling it too... No idea! I thought maybe it could be electrical... To do with the immobiliser maybe?

Help? Any ideas!

It 'sounds' like an immobilizer fault ....

Dealer rang back... Claim its petrol in the diesel engine :o

My dad checked all his receipts and def not... Surely it wouldnt start first time even.

Sounds like they cant work it out and are clutching at straws... Making some bs about testing it and it caught fire, diesel doesnt... Surely to test that they would need to drain the tank? Which they havent done.

Going to have to go their and demand a refund and i'll take it to the specialist in Telford.... The last thing i need on my dads off! :x

Found this on google... Maybe the cam sensor or fuel pump.

Diesel doesn't catch fire?! Wouldn't be a very good fuel then. I've much first hand experience with it catching fire-- it's my favourite fire starter. It doesn't flash like petrol will when ignited. I'm sure you'll be staying away from that dealer in the future.

What a totally useless dealer.Take it to an indy, they'll put the time in to find the fault.have you tried putting a posting on the BMW section on Pistonheads, there's loads of knowledge on there.

That is the same engine as I had in my E53, and similar symptoms to what I had once. In that case, it was the glow plug control unit which was faulty.

The error code readings are misleading for that one, as it will say that the glow plugs are faulty - but different ones each time.

Once it starts - does it bellow smoke for a little bit?

Spot on PVR

Took it to another dealer, and they said no issues but thought they would check this... replaced it.. and it cured the problem.

Even better BMW covered the cost (minus a few bits and bobs and the diagnostics)

No smoke, but my mum claims its nosier then normal now - which might just be her imagining that there is a problem with it

The manifold needed to come off for that box to be fitted. Perhaps they did not seal it properly and it is blowing? (hope not ...)
