Access to rear speakers when roof is off

Hi, I have quickly discovered since getting my z4 (with the really basic sound package, live and learn etc) that access to the rear cpeakers hehind the headrest is a bloody pain. I have found the cables to them running behind the cubby hole and I can reach up through the boot to get to the speakers I think but there is no way that I could remove and replace them that way (and they have both given up)

Conveniently, the garage I bought the thing from was supposed to have taken the roof off completely and topped up the fluid for the motor before I got it, and still have to do it.

When the roof is off, is it easy to swap the speakers out or is there still a load to do?

a lot of good points listed above but i'd personally have to disagree with the current eq settings employed.

I opted for an Audison Bit10d (think JL cleansweep but a bit more adjustability, better value and more advanced piece of kit)

works well and has allowed to run my front 2 way set up active along with a separate line for the subwoofer side.

And if the garage is going to take the roof off far better to take the opportunity to fit a new roof motor rather than trust to luck of a 'top up'...... :?
 
Thanks all, think that gives me a pretty decent answer about replacing those speakers, god what a task! Do you reckon that by taking the cables up to those rears I could put some mids into the cubby holes and just use them (I know the range is limited but I really can't be bothered to run new cables around to them when they are that low behind my seat that the treble is heard only by my lower back!)

As for the motor, don't worry I'm entirely planning on getting them to replace it if there are any signs of rust. Its a facelift so the rust problem should be better I hope.

I'll post a photo once I clean it, you wouldnt have any idea what it is at the moment!

:D Mine was that way up till a few days ago. Finally had a decent day where I wouldn't go numb washing it. Then it freakin' snowed 3" that stayed around for a couple more days. Then finally the sun came out, the last couple days, except it's been below freezing the entire time! As low as -12C each morning! Will winter ever freakin' end here? :headbang:

I opened this thread with the mind to say the headrest speakers are the best candidates for abandonment if there ever were any, but billy_beemer covered it so well there was little point any more. So here I am now going on about the weather. Seriously OT! :roll:

Anyone with audio comments?
 
Personally (from what I learnt about wiring part 1 of my system in (as described above) it would be easier if you wanted to upgrade the rear portion to make a mounting plate (tracing from the oem metal one)

and fit a set of components (or separates) in there.

I'll be planning to fit a pair of coaxil 6.5" speakers as well as a pair of bullet tweeters all run of a JL Audio XD200/2 which will be housed in the compartment itself.

should lend itself to be nice and clean for some rear fill and if the need calls for it, to really get loud effortlessly.

I shall be using some JBL GTO-6537 components as I know these are highly dependable for abusing (which I will do, and also have them laying about begging to be used)

main purpose for this? Well its far easier to get access so the sub area as apposed to taking all the plastic off for the little 3" or whatever it is.

Not to mention that there's better bang for buck with aftermarket speakers in 6.5"
 
NeilP might be right. After I finished I thought I'd just pick up the OEM part that covers the rear loud speakers, can't find them anywhere, the dealers aren't much help either. Check REALOEM.COM and you will see they sell what I believe is the metal mounting plate. If only I'd known that before I custom made one.

As for the JL cleansweep I bought one, wired it up and always thought it sounded too flat. The default head unit does very little EQ to the front channels and apparently the EQ it does do it specific to the cabin and not for the usual reason which is to protect the rubbish OEM speakers.

The rears, if you can be bothered, yes replace the top ones, I did. But it took hours and you can't rush it else you may snap something etc.

If you're anywhere near Camberley in Surrey I'd happily give you the industry standard test (BORN SLIPPY on full volume) :)

My main issue when I got the car was that I drove it home (top down) along the motorway thinking... really... this..is..full..volume? It's fine round town etc but out on the open road it was incredibly quiet...

I firmly believe you should focus your efforts on getting the quality from the front. Yes the rears matter but not as much as the front, all four of the rear speakers in a Z4 are behind a seat which is never a good start.

If you do decide to amplify the rear feed you will need something like a JL cleansweep as the EQ on the rear has the majority of bass removed etc.

I did all this as the car has the factory sat nav etc, if you've not got the pop up display then the first thing I would do is replace the headunit........

Just googled it, sounds like a bit of kit. However...... you can try a line-out convertor setup and see if you like. They cost about 20pence etc and I always thought they were terrible. I'm really impressed with mine.

I have ordered the metalparts that holds subwoofers. Cost about 30 euros/piece.

Lots of different bolts too, cost some euros.

Lids to subwoofers about 15 euros.

Subwoofers 199,-/pair

Top-hifi amplifier 300,- (used)

Midranges 99,-/pair

Tweeters 120,-/pair

Thinking of replace the oem speakers in rear since have already taking the consoles of. Now need to think how big job still ahead to replace the mid ranges...

Already had a day job and needed help of a friend. :lol:
