About to buy

Hi

I have been reading a lot of threads and the help on here is fantastic. I have posted in the newbie section but it may be better in the E85 / E86 Z4 discussion.

I am looking to buy a Z4 3.0, early model 2003/4. I am also about to move to Germany for 2-3 years and am required to change the lights to LHD ones. The rears are cheap enough but I can't seem to find any LHD headlights (not even sure they are made any more). I know there are probelms using facelift ones if they are xenon so any help on best way to proceed (aftermarket, facelift etc...).

Sorry no pics from me (yet) as I haven't bought one (yet)!

Finally thanks and a big hello.

Hi and welcome :)

you should definitely rear AlanJ's checklist before purchase, if you already haven't.

You can buy LHD headlights from ebay.de but no idea if the wiring would be the same as straight swap or not.

good luck in your search :)

Welcome to the fun house :)

Pre facelift xenon headlights (and post facelifts as far as I know) have an adjuster to swap from RHD to LHD. There's a metal switch on the unit

Thanks for the replies. I have been looking on ebay.de but LHD xenons are rare! Probably safer to buy a Halogen version (oh well).

Adamski, I have researched the lever option but it only flattens the beam. For the test the car has to undergo, it has to have LHD lights so the beam is higher on the right (aparently so you can read signs!).

hello and welcome

why not just buy a car when out in germany? saves on having to convert the lights

I did think about that initially but they are about £3000 more for the same car (apart from being LHD). I'm not sure why but LHD's hold their value very well, probably because it's a bigger market. I'd also have to sell when I came back. I've emailed BMW to see if they can supply the lights, prepared for the price shock :o

Have spoken to someone who will convert RHD lights to LDH for £300, I could possibly do myself but he guarantees them. Bizarely it is a BFG requirement to have the LHD lights and the German TUV (MOT equivalent) is happy for you to simply flatten the beam with the previously mentioned lever. Who would have thought the British would be more regulated than the Germans on their own soil!! :D
