Abnormal Engine Noise From 3.0 Z4

Hi,

This is one of the wierdest problems i've ever had on any car but i'm hoping someone can shed some light on it.

I've got a 2003 3.0i SE Z4

When the car is started from cold it sounds and runs perfect. Once it warms up the engine starts to make a really wierd noise. The really strange thing about this though is that it only does this if the front of the car is pointing uphil,l when stationary, or on an uneven surface so the drivers side of the car sits lower than the passenger side.

If the front of car is facing downhill, then the noise is not there.

Its been back to the main dealer twice now. The first time they thought it was the oil pump that was causing it, so they changed that under warranty two months ago. The noise disappeared but has now returned, although it isn't half as loud as it was the first time. This time i've had other bits changed around the head but still the problem exists, in the same situation, when warm, front end facing uphill or on an uneven surface.

I've checked the oil level and thats fine. its at maximum and the oil service was carried out when the pump was changed. I'm at a loss really as to what it could be.

The noise sort of sounds like an old steam train when the wheels go around if that makes sense. crap description i know.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Thanks

Auto or manual tranny? In gear or neutral? Clutch in or out?

Many of us have a bit of "gear rattle" when sitting on a slight hill, engine in neutral, clutch engaged.

Manual gearbox, in neutral, but still makes the noise whether the clutch pedal is in or out.

Its really bizarre :headbang:
