Wow that's almost as low miles as mine (I bought a 2004-54 on 18k miles in Dec 2008). An 03 with that low mileage should have been serviced according to age instead of miles I'd guess. It's usually approx 15k miles OR 2 years between services (variable depending on driving style).

I think it would follow this pattern if it wasn't reaching the approx 15k miles within 2 years (someone please correct me if I'm wrong):
2003 - car new
2005 - inspection 1
2007 - oil change
2009 - inspection 2
2011 - oil change due

The dash will show a figure for the approx miles to next service, but don't go on this if the mileage is low because it will become time-dependent instead of miles-dependent. A lot of folk get this wrong though and don't realise servicing becomes time-dependent if you don't do many miles. I only do 6-7k miles per year so in theory I need mine serviced every 2 years, but I do interm oil changes every 12 months anyway (worth it for the sake of £50 in oil it costs me).

shouldnt it be:

2003 - car new
2005 - oil change
2007 - inspection 1
2009 - oil change
2011 - inspection 2
2013 - oil change due

??

I think gannet is right - there's an oil service first before any inspection services. Basically, servicing alternates between oil changes and inspections (with oil change forming part of the inspection service). Inspection 2 is a bigger service than inspection 1 and is costlier as a result, so is something to bear in mind when haggling price.

Also bear in mind that brake fluid is scheduled to be changed every 2 year irrespective of mileage.

if you're confident you know the spec you want, you could always take advantage of a nearby main dealer and get them to ship a car from another in their network up to you? save on the travel

not a bad idea...I'm not sure many main dealers keep stock in the 03/04/05 range on 3.0 litres ... also my local dealer in aberdeen is not renowned as being the most helpful.

early days i'm in no particular rush...

are you saying it might be more reliable than my daily driver... disco 3 ??

I have a D3 and anything is more reliable than one of those. I love my D3 and it is amazing but it does have its issues. Had my Z4M for just over a year and have to say it is really solid piece of engineering. I would advise you go for an M, but then i am biased. Hope you find what your are looking for, you will not regret getting a Z. Z and D3 perfect combo - best 4x4 and best sportscar (within a sensible price braket). Are you on the Disco3 forum?

Look forward to seeing pics of your new Z.
