A strange noise that I think is coming from the rear

Hi guys, I'm new to the forum, so firstly, hi to everyone!
I had a slightly buckled rear off side alloy which I've replaced. And now I've been left with a noise which is hard to write down, basically like a whum whum whum noise and gets faster with speed and at times sounds like a helicopter is above me. What could this be? Possibly a wheel bearing?

Cheers guys

Hello and welcome!

It could be a bearing. Can you jack the car and spin the wheels by hand? Check it's not a brake binding etc.

Anyhow, sorry to hear your first post is a problem, do post some pics when you're ready as

:worthless:

Thanks for you reply! I've got the car jacked up at the moment and the right rear as I spin gets slowed down by the brakes as if it bites in certain places, and the left rear sounds like it bites all the way round the spin and they both come to a stop. Should they spin until they slowly come to a stop? As I shake the wheel, there's no movement in the wheel it self.

Will most definately get some pics up when I've got it all polished! Wanted to own a 3.0 z4 for ages and now I finally do

Hi,
How does it compare to the other side?
Maybe there was damage done when the alloy was buckled, was the noise there before.
Try braking slightly and seperately applying the handbrake a little when driving to see if it makes a difference to the noise. Also after the drive see if the wheel /disk is hotter on that side - it would point to a binding brake.

The right seems to bite on and off where as the left bites continuously (as does both my mums BMW 3seies rear wheels) do you think it could possibly be a buckled brake disc making then noise?

When the cars jacked up in the middle, so both wheels are off the floor, if you go to turn the wheel a little, there's an ever so slight tap hat seems to come from the diff as it goes to turn the wheels

Could be the disk warped then. The diff noise I think is normal.
If this only started when the wheel was buckled then there could other damage, I'd take it to a decent garage and get them to check it out including suspension alignment as there maybe other damage as well. :(

Had it looked at by a mechanic and he is changing the rear wheel bearing today :) luckily nothing too bad. Thanks for your help guys

Good news, get him to thoroughly check the alignment if you can. Better to find out now than before your rear tyre gets worn out
