A rant and a paint question

OK then rant first: Yesterday we had a run round Norfolk and stopped on the coast at Sheringham. For those of you who know the town I parked at the west end of the sea front - service road with parking spaces on the right side of the road at ninety degrees to it. I reverse parked into a space - now it was dead and I had a clear twenty spaces empty on each side of the car. There were a few cars in front of me parallel with the kerb on the left of the road.

Got back to the car; only been away about 20 mins to find a big red scuff on the N/S of the front bumper about the size of a football smack. No cars parked at the sides of me still a good twenty spaces each way. Couple of cars in front of me - none red.

So what sort of dim witted; bell end can manage to drive into me with all that space and then drive away - some f'in pensioner no doubt who's had a go at parking or three point turning and no doubt doesn't even know they hit our car - next time they clean their Honda Jazz and notice the scrap mark on the door or bumper they'll be clueless. Or worst still some low life who knows they did it and just f'ed off. How the hell do these people get a licence or sleep at night knowing what they've done? Oh and please don't think I'm being over hard on pensioners I'm retired myself!

What is it about BMW's that w*****s have to park next to you - park on your own and there's always a pensioner or mum in a battered people carrier next to you when you get back. To add insult to the injury its our five series which is only a few years old - the Zed would have been bad but this still has a lot of value locked up in it relative to an E85.

So the red came off with 'T cut' but I'm left with some fine-ish marks. A couple I can get my nail to drop into but they can't be seen from a foot or more away. Now I do most things myself: all the spannerwork on my cars; I've built house extensions; plumbing; rewiring etc but over the years I learnt to avoid two things - plastering and car paintwork. Pointing a rattle can is the limit of my experience. Can you detailing guys suggest something that might hide the marks until I get enough marks to warrant a body shop (or Chips Away) flashing over the bumper.

First photo shows the marks really well as the T cut residue is still in the marks (even though it insists on loading sideways)

- it looks better wiped with a damp cloth!

An expert might be able to wet sand & then machine polish those marks?
I feel your pain, annoys the hell out of me when people park touching my door handles in an empty car park, muppets everywhere!

I feel your pain OP - why don't people seem to give a sh*t about other people's property these days? :headbang:

Luckily my daily is 14 years old so I'm not so bothered about that, but still always try to park it on its own whenever I can and ideally at the end of a row so I know I'll have room to open my door when I get back!

So, wet and sand is the best option here. It’s not overly complicated. Buy a decent pack off amazon with 1200 right up to 5000 grit. An hour on that and you’ll get most of the marks out of this. Don’t move on to the higher grits until you’ve got all the big marks out. Then move onto the higher grits alternating up down and right left with each new grit. Finally hit the area with compound and polish and you’ll be surprised how good it will come up.

Watch a few YouTube videos for technique and confidence.

If you really don't like the idea of wet sanding, could you maybe try first with a mild cutting polish, then a coloured polish to fill any lighter areas. A final coat of wax and it might just be sufficient.
If it doesn't work you still have the wet sand option.
