A Night Cap

ronk

My daughter bought me a bottle of Highland Park Dragon Legend for Christmas and I was going to have a wee one tonight.

The stopper / cork was dry and it crumbled
Plan ‘B’ a Rusty Nail instead

I might give that a go in the morning
I’ve banged off a bellyache email to them so might see what happens.

It’s only happened to me once before on a bottle of cask strength Glenfarclas - the cork would not pull so had to be pushed in and decanted funnily enough into a Highland Park bottle!

Get a Screwpull & screw it in as far down as it will go then remove slowly & gently. May still leave a bit of crumbly residue... in which case a bit of muslin or a tea strainer when you pour your first glass should fix it. Real cork is unpredictable & prone to failure even from the best of sources. I'm fond of decent wine now and again and even manage to let a few bottles get quite old before they're opened. After 20-25 years it's a bit of a lottery whether the cork will come out cleanly or fall apart.
But hey if they give you a free replacement...then nice result and I dare say you might still try rescuing the original unless they want it back :D

They answered my email this afternoon - gave me their standard pitch of cork being a natural product and how sunlight etc can dry it and why you shouldn't store the bottles horizontally.

They asked for Serial No., and a purchase receipt and say they will supply me with a new super design of bung in 7 or 10 days but no suggestions how to remove the current bung.
This happened on a bottle of Glenfarclas years ago and the cork went into the bottle when I used a cork screw, fortunately I had a spare bottle with only a small amount remaining so it wasn't a problem.

Ive asked them how I should attempt extraction and await their reply - The Jury is out at the moment on their customer service! :(

I just hope its worth the faff when I do get into it. Ok its not too expensive at £40 but its not just a cheapo bottle of Grouse!

Anything with a design like this works wonders on corks
