Well I've had a couple of weeks and a few more miles in the Z4 so I thought I'd do a little update on it.
Its been an interesting car to get used to as its so totally different from anything I've had before. The power is still laugh out loud good and I dont think I could ever tire of the noise it makes it really is just such a good sound and pretty loud for a standard car.
My first experience of switching off the DSC traction control (or as I call it the "immediate death button") didnt go to well and to be quite honest I wondered if I could ever get on with such a lairy car.
But a few visits to some snowy car parks and a couple of drives with the DSC switched out I've got more used to it. The old VX needed to be provoked into a slide but the Z4 does it for fun which has been the main adjustment to get used to. If you provoke the Z it will just rip your spleen out. Its actually quite easy to control and requires surprisingly light inputs on the throttle and steering to gather things up especially in this weather. It will break traction in 3rd gear at the moment when you hit the powerband but hopefully when it warms up the power should be a bit more expoitable. The Sport button isnt really useable at the moment as it makes the throttle a bit digital and just lights the rears up in an instant!
Despite the leather seats (heated memory seats) I find it quite raw. Its a concusion that surprised me but it really does feel quite a raw car. The steering is excellent for a powered setup and you feel all the bumps and hear the car clunking over them very much like you get in the VX. It also feels quite light on its feet for a 1500kg car and its very keen to change direction. The ride is very well judged and is a welcome relief from the spine bothering ride of the F1!
So overall at the moment I'm more than chuffed with it. Its got a lot of depth and you feel like theres a lot more to learn about the car which is always a big plus for me as I do tire easily of cars if they arent entertaining enough. Looking forward to getting it on track as I think thats where you need to be with a car like this to even start to explore the last 20-30% of its capabilities.
MPG is showing 22 at the moment which is about 2 less than we used to get in the megane and almost half what the VX did! Oh well!
