? a different roof problem

Hi guys,

I'm having a problem with my roof. The roof motor has been replaced prior to my ownership 2 years ago.

Today I tried to lower the roof and nothing happened, the windows did not drop, the lights did not flash, the latches did not move. I then tried the key in the door, and the windows dropped but the roof latches did not move, nor the roof itself. Then turning the key to lock, the windows went back up, and the red light started flashing at the switches. I tried the buttons again, no response. I put the key in and out a few times, and the red light stopped flashing.

I have checked the microswitch, even disconnected it, and bypassed it using some wiring between contacts, this makes no difference to using the buttons, or turning key in door.

I have checked all three fuses, they are ok.

So, i took the allen key to the manual override, and managed to move the roof away from the windscreen off the latches, and then using the buttons, the roof moved back as normal, completed retracted, and lights off, and windows up. However when going back up, the motor brings the roof all the way up, and the latches start to lock, but it doesn't quite complete and the red light continues to flash. The roof appears latched down, but I can still turn the allen key a few turns, which may be making it slightly tighter. Having done this though, the roof doesn't go down using buttons/key in door.

I suspect that the roof isn't latching closed properly, and is there a sensor for this?

I'd appreciate any guidance, before engaging with BMW dealers. Or, if anyone knows of a BMW specialist in west/north london, or birmingham that can deal with roof problems, please let me know.

I went to a local indy today, who hooked up the car and found fault codes for CVM4-11 covertible top - hall sensor. He also said that he couldn't connect to the car properly, and couldn't run diagnostics to each component as it came up with an error code. He said that this may be because the convertible top module is faulty. But, he was a little perplexed as there were no other fault codes.

Anyone have any bright ideas to the cause of fault??

The indy asked me to leave the car for another day to look into it further, but suggested that he may need to replace the convertible top module.

Thanks for that, its a really useful document. I've seen bits of it on other forums, but not the whole thing. I suspect that one of the hall sensors, the one that detects when the roof is up, is misaligned or faulty. There is one located within the roof mechanism/adjacent to the motor. Does anyone know if I can access this, or will I have to take the roof mechanism off completely?
 
I don't think it's the hall sensor in the roof hinge assembly because the latches started to operate once the roof was close to the closed position. The main purpose of this sensor is to trigger the latching mechanism, which completes the closing/locking process. (AFAIK you have to remove the roof to access these)

There are additional sensors in the windscreen head rail that manage the locking hooks. I suspect this is where the problem lies. It may be a wiring problem, maladjusted sensors, faulty sensors, or even a faulty module. Or the latching motors do not work in the release direction for some reason. Could be many things really, but most likely in the headrail. I've no idea how to access these components or what further testing can be done. Do keep in mind this is all mostly speculation on my part. Hope this helps some, good luck on resolving this.
