911 Turbo to E89 Z4

Hi Everyone,

I sold my 911 Turbo last Monday and am currently looking for a E89 Z4. I wanted to pull a little cash out of the 911 for another little project that I have so budget is around £18k for the Z4.

I'm not overly worried about which engine it has or what the running costs are but do like my cars to have some toys, so if I may I have a few questions in this regard.

Whilst browsing I notice that not many cars have the NAV option fitted. Is this an expensive option? and what else other than the NAV function does this system bring with it?

What sorts of things were fitted as standard to the cars? For example is Bluetooth fitted as standard and can you connect your IPhone to play music as standard?

Whilst reading through threads I notice that the IPhone gets a lot of mentions. Is there some sort of extra compatibility with the IPhone and the Z4? I'm a big IPhone fan so would like to utilise it in any way I can.

I would quite like to have an auto box in the Z4 but would not rule out a manual. What are your opinions on the auto?

From my searches It would seem to me that the 35i seems to tick most of my boxes as it generally seems to be the best equipped and has the possibility of DCT. It is however out of my budget, but If I apply a little man maths to the equation it could be a possibility. What are your opinions on the 35i?

The Z4 is a pretty new car, but is there anything else that I need to know about it?

Finally, I'm really busy at work for the next 5 weeks so viewing cars is possible but not easy. I may just wait until June to resume my search in full. As the Z4 is a cabriolet, do you think that prices may actually rise as the weather gets warmer?

Sorry for all of the questions and thanks for your views.

Cheers Shaun.

Wow 911 turbo to a zed...interesting...is the little project interesting?

Can't really help as I don't have an e89...but I'd go for the biggest engine you can otherwise I'm sure you'll regret selling the turbo!!

The project isn't actually car related, I'm looking to get a set of cdj2000 DJ decks. It may sound a little strange but a friend of mine has a set, and it's something I fancy having a go at.

I really don't mind too much about the drop in power. The 911 was running around 500bhp, so to be honest there is very little else could touch it in that respect, so I'm not even going to try. Again it may sound strange but I got a little bored of it after 3 years, I guess I've got the t shirt on that one.

The Z4 is a great looking car, it looks just as good with the top up as it does down, which is its major draw for me.

After that much bhp you probably got fed up with never actually pressing the accelerator.....

Why not go the other way, get the smallest engine with the biggest spec and then have some foot down fun.?

Mutimedia Professional is indeed expensive (nav) at just over two grand. Its more than just navigation however, its a complete idrive car control system for nav, music, car setup etc. You'll find more 35i/35is have them fitted as they were expensive cars new and if you can afford to pay that kind of money, you can afford the extras too.

You don't see it on too many 23i/30i/28i and even less on the 20i as these are budget cars for many (not all though).

Almost all toys were extra when the car was launched in 2009. In 2010/11 USB became standard for audio plus a few other bits. Bluetooth was I believe, but could be wrong, optional. The only extra you can get in iPhone usage is BMW Apps, which is an iPhone interface for the car, an option. Other than that the iPhone doesn't really bring anything that other phones do.

The auto box is loved by many, with no apparent weaknesses. Same for the manual. I'd be biased and suggest the DCT is the best of both worlds of course, it works very well with the 35i/iS.

You've mentioned already that you're not bothered about the engine, so your best deal is likely to come from a 23i/20i. 35i/iS is a very different car with bags more grunt than any of the other engines, not to mention the sound, which is awesome when pushed.

Hope some of that helps....

Regrading the iPhone stuff - google BMW connecteddrive and BMW apps - but remember the car needs option mobile app prep (6nr) fitted to use the apps, and BMW online to use some of the connected drive stuff

Hope that helps

Thanks very much for the info guys, it's exactly what I was looking for.
I'll take a look at the connected drive stuff tonight.
I don't suppose anyone knows if some of the options are an easy retro fit?
Obviously the multimedia system would be too big a job, but what about the connected drive?
The more I look the more I justify a higher budget in my head.....

Connected Drive is a term for iDrive online functionality and associated technologies such as the iPhone unlock etc. You need BMW Assist contracts to use the latter which generally also means you'll have the iDrive. Therefore if you want iDrive, get a car with it as its more than just a screen, there is quite a bit to it and not an easy retrofit.

This car was not designed with easy retrofit options. Not even cruise is an easy fit compared to the e85 Z4 etc.

If you are looking at new cdj's try www.decks.co.uk for a good deal. If you need cases for them give me a shout, it's what I do www.swanflight.com
I will do you a good price on cases.

A 991 turbo getting boring? Thats UK roads and traffic for you :D

I do get it actually, even with my M i rarely get chance to give it some welly :( Another couple of hundred HP must be near impossible to use much :o

My missis just sold her CDJ's, we're getting old now and her DJ days are sadly over. I'll no longer be the fella stood by the DJ booth with a bottle of Peroni bored and waiting to go home

Thanks again for the info maniac, it's much appreciated. I'm leaning more and more towards the 35i by the minute, I guess I can fund the decks from somewhere else!

Thanks for the link to the decks quadracer, I'll be sure to give you a shout if I need cases. Actually seeing you car on here is a bit of a coincidence. I was talking to a friend at work earlier about me looking for a Z4, and he pulled out his phone out to show me a pic of a yellow Z4 that belonged to a Chap he was talking to at Cadwell on Monday. It stuck in my mind because it was the first yellow one i had seen. I don't suppose it was you was it?

Dreamer, your right about the UK roads, it is too much power to use on them regularly. I have also changed to day work from shifts recently, so it' was getting more use in traffic than it did do. The biggest problem with the 911 is that strangely enough it is too good at what it does. You need to be doing some seriously quick speeds before it gets to the point that your having fun, it would only have been a matter of time before I lost my licence. I'm too old for the club scene myself, I just fancy the decks to play around with. I had a play with my mates house and was instantly hooked.

when I was looking it surprised me the amount of kit you normally get on a BMW that ISN'T standard on the Z4. For instance a must for me was cruise, so if you want that it cannot be retrofitted. parking sensors again are a must, especially with the long bonnet, but at least they can be retrofitted albeit with varying success. plus there is the lack of dipping interior mirror on the 2.3.
saying that if you manage to get a 35i in your budget then it will probably be well equiped

Obviously the ongoing financial crisis will still have an affect on peoples ability to buy a Z4 or similar but it will be the usual thing of paying more for a sports car/convertible in Spring than if you had bought in January. (Same as for a 4 x 4 approaching Winter)

Yes it was me at Cadwell on Monday, really good day and the weather was spot on. I've arranged Zed only sessions for a day in July. If you manage to find a Zed by then you should join us, details in the meets/events section.

Your right pacemaker, the more I read the more I realise the standard Z4 is pretty scarcely equipped. I guess it fits more most people. I have decided to blow the budget and get a 35i with dct and nav.

Hi boris, the sensible thing would be for me to wait till after the summer, but I'm not known for my patience. Perhaps as you say the financial crisis may be a help to me in this case.

It's a small world quadracer, I like the sound of a track day, I'll take a look if I'm set to go by then.

a little project hey ? hmm , I see there is a rolls royce meteor engine and bentley gearbox for sale at Bonhams auctioneers next month, 27 litre v12, same as the merlin sans supercharger and reduction gear. :driving:  ...........

Hi,
I'm sorted with a car now, thanks to everyone for all your help with my questions over a variety of threads.
The car is a white 35i with DCT, Nav and some oter bits.
If I have done it correctly there should e a picture below...

Now I have bought another turbo car I'll be going down the remapping route. After a little searching it looks like ESS do a nice package for $899, they also seem to get good reviews. Has anyone used these guys on their own cars? I would also be interested to hear about any other tuners that anyone has used.

I would also like to make things louder in the exhaust department. I have watched clips of the offerings from miltek and eisenman, but wasn't too impressed. Perhaps they sound better in real life. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has made changes to their exhaust or cats also.
