New spy shots of the new 911, engine still in the wrong place :poke:

I know people here say that the 911 is the only true Porsche, and that the Boxster/Cayman are only wannabe's. In my mind though I see that huge bulge in the rear and know that it's big engine sits where it shouldn't and there to allow for the 2+2 configuration that only a shrimp can use (literally).

So why not get rid of the +2 and move the engine to where it should be.... you see where I'm going now don't you

Most times that I end up talking to a porsche salesman they say the cayman can get round a track quicker than the '911'. I still have a soft spot for the 911 and wouldn't mind the turbo cabriolet, 0-60 in 3.6 sounds pretty amazing with the roof down. But if i had my choice of porsche it would be an old 356 convertible :)
Guess i'll keep on dreaming.

The 911 is in a different league to the Boxster and Cayman though IMO. A 997 feels so precise, and somehow makes the others feel more like toys...the Cayman feels great but the 911 just feels better. Despite where the engine is, they are wonderful to drive....and those rear seats are definitely good for occasional use. I'm just not convinced a well specced C2S is worth north of £80,000....I think I want a V8 for that

Is the new car / your order really jumping another £10k in price?

Current C2S is £76,120. You need to allow about £7k minimum for 'options'...they don't even include electric seats or sat Nav for that price, and I don't buy the 'lightweight' excuse - if that's what I wanted I'd have a GT3. So that's £82,000 ish.

The current car has alread risen close to £10k since its introduction in 2004, so if a basic S is going to be £90k I think they have truly lost it. Far too much IMO for a six cylinder car.... I'd rather have a 2000 mile DBS.

Apparently Porsches biggest sellers are now Cayenne and Panamera

I love the way they tape up the badge's as if any one would think they where anything other than porsche's

I'm starting to agree with you, and after looking at some of the rear shot's of the car it now look's a bit dumpy in height at the rear.

So given all that, I'm off to Audi today to have another look at the R8

:o

(not at the decision to look at the R8 - it's a great car - more the fact you're considering not to get a 911)

I can see where you're coming from. That's a lot of money for a "basic" 911.

Not a basic 911 but the 'S with circa £11-12k of options, I could have taken delivery at launch but will make a decision when I see the new car in the flesh now as it may look better at the rear then :? :)

Good plan if only to check you want it. Perhaps try the Vantage as well; it's not quite as focussed as a 911 but you just don't care, fabulous engine...or maybe a lightly used 997 Turbo - 2010 with 5k on the clock. That's one advantage of 911s - older ones still look good alongside newer ones*... maybe a lightly used 2010 Carrera S would fulfil the 911 fix for £25k less....?

* Except the 996 :rofl:

Forgive the ignorance. To me that 2012 Porker looks just like the 997, and the 996...

Funny on that graph of Porsche sales - look at the Cayenne sales and you can see the instant peak from the rich folk and the WAGs etc that had to have one when they first came out and then it plummets from there down.

Came close to buying a 996 instead of the Z4 and decided running costs mattered to me (I actually don't mind the funny headlights of the 996). For £20-30k though there's so many options out there now, was reasonably tempted by an M5 as well for that price, then remembered I wanted a 2 seater! The comment about a Vantage - would it be as fun to drive? I think of it as a bit more of a relaxed GT compared to a 911 or E89. I think I wouldn't be able to drive an Aston I owned either, I'd end up just staring at the beauty of it... A few k more and I'd have seriously considered a Cayman S though, love them.

A lot of the drop can be attributed to the recession, though the decline is pretty steep....Asia / Middle East sales of the Cayenne and Panamera are a huge part of Porsches business these days apparently. I read something that said a lot of consumers at Chinese delaerships dont even know Porsche make sports cars?...

:o

The Vantage is definitely fun to drive, it's a sporting car...more GT than the E86 Z4, but its not soft by any means. The 997 S is more precise - all the cliches are true, it just somehow feels brilliant and instantly familiar - but the engine and sense of occasion in the Aston make up for it being 7/10s of the 911 to drive. They are equally brilliant for different reasons IMO...

Nearly new rather than new worth considering though, they lose so much in the first year
