8J wheels on an E85?

For comparison I recently put 18 x 8 et20 and 18 x 9 et22 on my e85. I went from 19’s and the ride is considerably better now. I previously had tramlining issues that I just couldn’t resolve. No rubbing and I’m as low as possible in coilovers. I did try a 20mm spacer in the rear but this did cause rubbing on full compression.

On tyre sizes 215/45/18 and 235/40/18 you’d have no issues with rubbing even particularly if lowered

Did you have your alignment done after fitting/lowering? If so, do you know what sort of figures you ended up with?

I did have alignment done but this was over a year ago, when I got new rubber in the now sold 19’s. They just got it as close as possible to the spec on the alignment system.

I did get a print out but annoyingly can’t find it now

To give you an idea of the difference here are a couple of photos of my 2nd E86. The first is with 108s the 2nd with E89 wheels of the same sizes but different offsets. 18mm further out on the front and 10mm further out on the rear.

Hi Mr Tidy ! . . . . . reviving an old thread . . . .

Can you please : 1) share other photos of your former Z4 Coupe with E89 rims ? 2) tell whether the front wheels with 18mm added offset gave you any rubbing (running stock tire sizes) ??

I need new wheels, and my plan to fit a set of Style 125's fell through. I have new stock "Sport" springs with Bilstein B4's, so not lowered at all. If I can run E89 18" staggered wheels with the standard 225/40R18 and 255/35R18 tires I'd be happy - I like the tires a little more to the edge of the wheel arches. If you had rubbing with your fronts, I'll probably go with Z4M (Style 224) rims - but since I like 325's and they are a bit less $$ . . . .

I would have PM'd you, but figured others might want to see my question and your response. Thanks !

Hi Z4Mariner.

I fitted staggered 18" Style 295s from an E89 35is to my 3.0Si Coupe - 8J ET29 fronts with 225/40 tyres and 8.5J ET40 rears with 255/35s. It was on OE Sport suspension and I didn't get any rubbing front or rear.

Hopefully this photo will help.

Hey everyone,

So i have a 2003 3.0 with the Style 108 staggerred setup from the factory. I gave up on hunting for CSL reps because, i aint made of money. Was falling back into the wheel spacers idea. i just want the rear wheels to sit outwards a bit more, flush with the arch. Should i still avoid wheel spacers?

Its just a shame that with the staggered setup, the read wheels sit inside a bit too deep. wasnt considering adding spacers/offsetting the front wheels. Do let me know what you all think.

I have put 20mm spacers on those rear wheels and it does fill the arches nicely.
Personally I shy away from spacers in the front as they get enough load through them without increasing the ‘leverage’ by moving the wheels out more.
Others have spaced the fronts too.

Hmm. i will talk to my mechanic about this. Indeed for the fronts, it seems alright.

Forgot to mention the wheel specs:

Front: 8Jx18 ET47
Rear:8.5Jx18 ET50

Same setup as yours right?

Yes that is the standard spec for those wheels and 20mm worked fine on the rear.

Sounds good. any recommendad brand/model wheel spacers to look for? im new to this, dont want to end up with something crap from Autodoc. got 270,000 KM's on my zed and i want to clock in much more safely, as the years pass by

You need to get 'hubcentric' so they locate securely on your hub. Choices of black or silver usually.
You should also get a set that includes the longer bolts. These too come in a choice of black or silver.
Remember if you have locking bolts that they will be too short to fit with a spacer.

THANKS to forum members on this thread and others for your help!

As described, I needed new wheels for my Z4 Coupe, preferably quickly. I decided I wanted an OE look. After looking over my bent wheels (which had been refurbished by a PO), I decided I wanted new, not used – if possible.

After many calculations, lots of reading (much of it on this forum), and comparison of which tires I could run, I settled on a set of four Z4 M front wheels (Style 224, all four 8Jx18). Unlike many (most?) of the OE wheels for E85/E86’s and even E89’s, the style 224 wheels were still available, and in the US. I chose Michelin PS4 AS tires to go with them. I was uneasy running the 9Jx18 rear M wheels, because the ET 30 and the extra half inch of width put the wheel itself outside the wheel arch. I know some like this look, but not for me, nor the risk of tire scrub.

My wheel & tire size logic:

For the front, the M style 224 has ET 42 offset and shifts the wheel out 5mm more that ET 47 stock wheels, or about the same as running a 5mm spacer. In the front I fitted stock spec 225/40R18 PS4 AS’s that now sit 5mm outward of stock. I read on many fitting more aggressive offsets.

For the rear, ET 42 shifts the wheel out 8mm compared to the stock ET 50 fitment, but the wheel lip is 6.4mm less on each side because of the change from 8.5J to 8J wheels – the center of the wheel moved out 8mm, but the outer lip is only 1.6mm further out. In the rear I fitted non-stock spec 245/40R18 PS4 AS’s. This width was dictated by several things: Maximum recommended tire width for 8Jx18 rims is 245mm. The center of the rim is shifted outward by 8mm, therefore the sidewall of the tire is also shifted by this amount, and a 245mm width instead of 255mm gives back 5mm of clearance.

Why not same tire front and rear? For the street a little stagger in the tire patches will maintain an element of understeer, and the wheel fills the rear arch better. The choice of 40 versus 35 cross section in the rear gives a bit more sidewall for comfort and brings the speedometer to nearly accurate.

Please pardon the dirty car . . . . You can see from the photos above that the clearances are conservative: 1) I am not in my twenties any more, 2) my wife enjoys riding with me, and I want to keep it that way.

Thanks to you all for your helpful comments !

PS - Thanks Mr Tidy for your picture of E89 rim fitment. I explored one E89 rim - but only 7 remaining front wheels in the world, they were all in Germany, and the estimated shipping time was 4-5 weeks.

Yes Z4Mariner, a previous owner put the 224 wheels on mine and the 9" wide wheels do stick out a bit too much at the back for my liking even with 245 tyres. I had pondered putting some fronts on the back with spacers but it would probably mean buying a complete set. And ending up with 2 rears left over :D

I hoped it may have helped, although it looks like E89 wheels weren't an option!

Still those 8J 224s all round look great.

It tramlines much worse compared to the OEM wheels. So while I say the fitment is great, the driving is diminished.
No rubbing anywhere.
