THANKS to forum members on this thread and others for your help!
As described, I needed new wheels for my Z4 Coupe, preferably quickly. I decided I wanted an OE look. After looking over my bent wheels (which had been refurbished by a PO), I decided I wanted new, not used – if possible.
After many calculations, lots of reading (much of it on this forum), and comparison of which tires I could run, I settled on a set of four Z4 M front wheels (Style 224, all four 8Jx18). Unlike many (most?) of the OE wheels for E85/E86’s and even E89’s, the style 224 wheels were still available, and in the US. I chose Michelin PS4 AS tires to go with them. I was uneasy running the 9Jx18 rear M wheels, because the ET 30 and the extra half inch of width put the wheel itself outside the wheel arch. I know some like this look, but not for me, nor the risk of tire scrub.
My wheel & tire size logic:
For the front, the M style 224 has ET 42 offset and shifts the wheel out 5mm more that ET 47 stock wheels, or about the same as running a 5mm spacer. In the front I fitted stock spec 225/40R18 PS4 AS’s that now sit 5mm outward of stock. I read on many fitting more aggressive offsets.
For the rear, ET 42 shifts the wheel out 8mm compared to the stock ET 50 fitment, but the wheel lip is 6.4mm less on each side because of the change from 8.5J to 8J wheels – the center of the wheel moved out 8mm, but the outer lip is only 1.6mm further out. In the rear I fitted non-stock spec 245/40R18 PS4 AS’s. This width was dictated by several things: Maximum recommended tire width for 8Jx18 rims is 245mm. The center of the rim is shifted outward by 8mm, therefore the sidewall of the tire is also shifted by this amount, and a 245mm width instead of 255mm gives back 5mm of clearance.
Why not same tire front and rear? For the street a little stagger in the tire patches will maintain an element of understeer, and the wheel fills the rear arch better. The choice of 40 versus 35 cross section in the rear gives a bit more sidewall for comfort and brings the speedometer to nearly accurate.
Please pardon the dirty car . . . . You can see from the photos above that the clearances are conservative: 1) I am not in my twenties any more, 2) my wife enjoys riding with me, and I want to keep it that way.
Thanks to you all for your helpful comments !
PS - Thanks Mr Tidy for your picture of E89 rim fitment. I explored one E89 rim - but only 7 remaining front wheels in the world, they were all in Germany, and the estimated shipping time was 4-5 weeks.
