Hey, I just got a 2003 Z4 today.
Along with a long list of options that are installed on it, most of which I know what are, is this:
639 COMPLETE PREP. CELLULAR PHONE USA/CDN

What exactly does this get me?
Does this just mean that should I like to have a car kit installed that preperations have been made for it?
Or is there something functioning already? Would it be hard to rig this to use bluetooth?

Somewhere in your paperwork you should have a bluetooth access code (4 digits?) that will enable you to pair a bluetooth phone.

Really, this should enable bluetooth as is?
I turned bluetooth on on my iPhone but it didn't seem to find anything...

I thought bluetooth didn't come with the Z4's until the 04 models? Other than that (which i'm not sure about that info) I have no clue what the cell phone prep thing is. So I guess what I'm trying to say is

+1

I don't think it is, I have "Option 644 - Bluetooth Phone Prep", this sounds more like an actual inbuilt carphone type thing.

I think BMW actually says that it's been doing bluetooth in their cars since '03

Yeah, I imagined that if it had bluetooth that it would actually say "bluetooth" somewhere... that's why this option has me stumped and I'm curious as to what I can do with it...
Would be very nice to use it to retrofit some sort of hands-free (bluetooh or not) for my phone... however not having any info on what it actually is I can't even begin to speculate as to how I would go about it...

The owners manual says that with the option I get a speaker mounted by the "rooflights" and I can see the grille for that in the car... I'm guessing the rest of the system hooks into the stereo somehow... so somewhere, behind the dash there must be some sort of connector I can hook into... would just be nice to get a little more info on what kinda connection it is and what it's capable of.

The iPhone headphones (and aftermarket converters) have a mic in them so you can use them to listen to music and as a handsfree.
I think the sweetest and easiest way to do it would be to hook up the audio-in of that cable (for the phone) to the in-car mike and the audio-out of the cable to the car-stereo aux.

My Z4 is just too fresh to me right now that I want to be ripping apart the dash looking for connectors and wires just yet.

The only thing I can think of is that your car is equipped with "BMW Assist" which was standard on U.S. and Canadian models hence it being part of the description.

Does your center console, behind the handbrake, have two buttons encased in a clear plastic cover? One says "SOS" and the other has a wrench icon on it. IIRC, this was not standard on European models.

Nope, no such buttons, just the door lock and hazard button behind the handbrake.
I think it must just be set up with the mic and some sort of stereo connectors for later installation of another kit.

Hi i have a 2003 Z4 also, i got a cradle in the centre console for a phone to plug in, there is a button that looks like a face shouting. If i press and hold "Phone" comes up on the stereo head unit. if i press it again, and talk the car would ask me to repeat what i said, or it will say cancel.

Does that mean i have bluetooth? or is it one of those old fashioned car phone kits? I tried finding devices from my phone on bluetooth, but it doesnt detect anything
