5W40?

I will be servicing my 2.0 N46 soon and because my zed has now done 136,000 almost trouble free miles :o (not bad for the infamous 4 potter ey') I just want to ask if it would be a good idea to use 5W40 now considering the mileage.

Also, does anyone have suggestions on the best oil to use. I have been using Fuchs 5W30 over the past few years with no probs. But wondered if there was a better option considering the mileage.

Thanks for reading, tug

I am using Millers Oils EE Performance C3 5w-30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil at the moment from Opie oils and am very happy with it.
From what I’ve read I will move over to 40 once I hit 100000 miles

Using castrol edge 5w-30m in mine and it's on 127k.

Making me question whether I should change the grade to 5w-40 especially considering I've just changed the oil last weekend!

Millers Nanodrive and now Millers Performance for the past 6 years and never had to top it up.

Get it from Opie Oils delivered to the door.

If your car’s reached that mileage without any problems I’d carry on with what you’ve been using so far, I’m assuming it’s not started burning oil?

I recently moved to 5w40 Castrol Edge from 5w30 @ 148k miles purely as a preventive maintenance move.
It was a bit of a chew to find the correct 5w40 'M' variant of what Castrol now refers to this oil as after previously marketing it as 'LL04' but I managed to find some eventually.
Haven't noticed any difference whatsoever but the point is it's very possibly a good preventive measure in helping to preserve the engine for as long as possible due to the slightly higher viscosity compensating for bore wear tolerance reduction as well as other engine components edging towards the outer limits of wear tolerance specs.
I also do intermittent oil services at 7500k miles without fail and the PELA pump has made changing the oil a doddle now.

Thanks for the replies, to answer Smartbear, in 6 years i have only ever had 1 "Add 1 litre" warning and that was when i had an oil leak which was quickly resolved. And reading Chris's post i think i will start using 5W40 as i am gonna see just how many miles my little 4 potter can get to.

Skelters, opie oils is a good shout, i will be ordering from them this time.

As for the zed, its the best motor i have ever owned. I did have a MR2 Mk 2 T bar 'unrestricted' back in the day and that was a beast

But my zed is far more superior in every way :) In my humble experience, if you look after the N46 then it will look after you

Chers, tug

I will probably get shot down for this but shouldn't you also change from 5 which is very thin to something like 10/40. Used to get my oil from eurocarparts but much cheaper to get service kit which includes filter from Opie oils

Unless your car is burning/using oil, there is no need to change away from the standard 5w-30. As your's doesnt use any, I would stick with the recommended 5w-30 as there is nothing to gain from using 5w-40, unless you are trying to solve a problem, such as oil consumption.

Cheers,

Guy.
