£5k Estate/Touring - BMW or Audi

I had exactly the same issue as you last year

I have had Audi before but do not touch the multitronic gearbox versions I paid a high price for owning one of these ( though the rest of the car was fantastic)

I found that when you starts to go see the cars there were so many dogs out there ( pardon the pun) it got depressing quite quickly so need to buy carefully

Because of the size of my dogs I needed a 5 series or a6 type size ( you can't get anything of any size in the back of an E46 and the A4 was a squeeze too)

So eventually I settled on a 2.0tdi Passat estate and after another 20k in it this year I'm happy with it
Note I was buying for size reliability and the dogs first - not driving pleasure - that's what the Zed is for !

Have you thought about a jag x type? I used to have one although not an estate and it was comfortable, quick and with the 4 wheel it handles really well. inside they are a really nice place to be, nine was really reliable but I know parts are cheap because I wrote it off and fixed it for next to nothing! Just make sure you get a v6 as they are really solid engines and are all 4 wheel drive the diesel ones are slow and only come in front wheel drive
