5 Greatest Drives

As an aside to the do you prefer Driving vs Cars thred got me thinking about my most memorable drives in a car and thought I'd share:

1. 2015 - Chasing a C4S up the San Bernadino with Jax Boxster in hot pursuit ( for once on that trip I'd got my driving shoes on and was out in front) - 997 Targa 4S - the road was dry and bright the German registered C4S had got a head start on us but we kept him honest and a very appreciative nod when we reached the summit for a coffee by the lake .

2. 2003- A93 Glenshee - MX5 around 7:00 am following a friend in his Mkl MX-5 early spring sunshine on a way to a meet. The MX-5 hitting the series of tight curves brilliantly on the way down we were on the way to a meet which i remember little about as the drive there was so perfect.

3. 2006 Bow Valley Parkway , canada - Jeep Liberty- early morning drive from Banff to Lake Louise on virgin snow as first car on the trail with the temp gauge at -22 deg C.

4. 2005 Pau in France to Faro Portugal in the day in week old Golf GTI crossing the Pyrenees at 5:00am 1000km in the day. Long motorway sections looking at vast landscapes and iconic black bulls positioned in the landscape. Great way to break the GTI in.

5. 2010 - Fortwilliam to Mallaig to Skye Bridge to Cullin Hiils -BMW Z4 3.0 roof down - due to a booking error we had to do the long way round on a hot but busy Scottish west coast - epic driving in a great car. Not a single M not a single coupe or facelift with us just 8 roadsters as Mr Bangle intended.

The one that just missed the list was driving a Landrover 90 defender anywhere - they make a trip to the shops feel like The Camel Trophy.

One fondly remembered is crossing swords with a Renault 5 turbo
on the back roads of Denby dale and Holmfirth in my old mk1 Mr2 ,boy that car handled well.

Too many to remember, every drive to the North Coast is a joy. Every Blast across the moors a mini adventure. Even Driving up the M6 at 50-60 mph roof down getting sunburnt and actually taking time to look at the scenery is a welcome change.

One of my favourite routes used to be across country from Portsmouth to Plymouth avoiding the major roads. It was my weekly commute for several months before we moved down here. Included a couple of hump back bridges to get air born over & Ooooh... Zig Zag Hill, I must return one day. :driving:

Another very memorable One off, was driving from Edinburgh to Cornwall avoiding Major routes, in a Astra Hire car, took the whole day was exhausting but so much fun. :D

Little foot note:- Nurburgring Ring and Spa though nice to tick off, don't compare to a good drive on an empty British B/C road, not in my book anyway.

We are planning to do the Fort William to Mallaig to Skye Bridge in April on our 7 day Scotland break  :driving:

I did enjoy that run to the cube hotel where Jack was right behind me. Even got the backend out a couple of times.

Harrogate to estopona the long way over 3 weeks , only had the first 3 hotels booked ! In a v8 discovery lhd full of everything we owned after selling up and deciding to do it when we were young enough .

I can't remember if I did the 2010 one, I did 3 highlander runs in total. The first one was in 2006 I think.

Yes, I remember now. 2005 in my 3.0 with the most glorious weather, 2007 running my M in and 2009 where it was rather moist :)

The drive across the Cambrian mountains to the Welsh coast takes some beating.

Highway 1 on the California coast is incredible, take your time and enjoy. I did it a few times, most memorably in a Chevrolet convertible. Avoid Los Angeles IMO.

Driving through the Kentucky/Tennessee smokey mountains region is worth the trip.
