3M Paint Protection

Has anyone considered this? or indeed has it fitted on the front bumper and bonnet edge?

I had a MINI Cooper S done a few years back and it did the job of protecting the paintwork from chipping but it was pricey.

Do you think its worth it?

Cheers,

Tim.

Hmmm, if you are doing a lot of motorway miles then yes, the front bumper does get a bit chipped. Whether its worth getting this done... not sure? :?

Thanks for that, I might do a bit of internet trawling, I remember it was over £400 to do the MINI so I reckon 600 plus to do the Zed, I think it would cheaper to just get a respray :|

Hi Tim, great looking car you have, how does the turbo perform / sound?

I have just bought a sheet of 3M protection film as the rear of my sills are beginning to get a little chipped, not too bad but thought this would help and fingers crossed (I haven't installed it yet) should be pretty much invisible. There are detailed instructions of how to make a template, cut and install and being a daily small area thought I would give it a try. Cost me around £20 for a large sheet. Just need a dry day which is hard to find at the moment!! If you want details I can send you a link.

cheers
Phil

As you now I do a lot of motorway miles, my front bumper is fine, it's my bonnet that's not :(

Hi Phil and thanks :)

Where abouts is the chipping on the sills? always interested too know and would be interested to know how you get on applying the film. If you can send me a link that would be great. I think if its an easy flat shape the film should be easy to apply but where there are lots of curves thats when it starts getting tricky :)

On my Z3 I have magnetic guards on the rear arches,

Cheers,

Tim.

I was considering this but didn't realise t was so expensive. As you say a respray will probably be cheaper. I'm also thinking that they won't be as noticeable on a white car.. Well not as noticeable as black or blue anyway..

What I have noticed myself doing though is hanging a lot further back from other cars than I always have in the past, hoping that this will have some effect on the reduction of chips. :)

I used to use venture shield on my bikes and it was on of the best mods I done, bikes are very prone to stone chips and when it came to sell a stone chip free bike I always got top money back for it.
I think venture shield do cars as well and it's real easy to fit
Good luck

Venture shield on all forward facing surfaces on mine. You can spot the line across the bonnet if you're looking closely, but not enough to worry me (and I'm quite fussy) ;-)

I recently has my front bumper resprayed and I am considering having it protected with the 3M product. A few other members in our local club have had this done and it is really hard to see and does a nice job of protecting. I also keep my distance from those in front of me and that does help a lot.

I looked into this a month or so ago, and got a quote for the front bumper, half the bonnet and half of the front wings, plus the sills and area in front of the rear wheels. The quote I had back was £1092 :o I decided that i wasn't prepared to pay that for is really just a sheet of plastic.
I also read that the paint often still chips - but because the film keeps the flake of paint in place you don't see it. That's fine, but if you ever take the film off, the flakes come away with it.
Chip repair products like Dr ColorChip are supposed to be very good, so I'll try that if needed I think.

Hmmmmm thanks for the replies, I guess I could just wrap the whole car :)

Seriously though after looking at a few sites that fit the stuff I think I'm going too leave it, I'm not a high mile muncher so its probably not cost effective to spend over £500 :o

IMHO, this is the first & best mod/upgrade you can do to your car if you put a lot of miles on it.
I had it installed on the front end and as one piece along the side skirts. Three years and 25K miles later, there was not ONE ping, mark, scratch etc. on the area's protected. Even with all the track time....

I had to remove the film in Dec for other reasons. No flakes, abrasions or marks after removal.
I know I am in the US and costs will be different, but it only cost me $700.00 to be installed. I am getting ready to reinstall the 3M sometime in the next month or so.

Hi Tim,

Sorry for the late reply, I have been away for a while. The chipping is beginning to occur as shown on the image. I would think with your mud flaps it would protect these areas. The web address for the pain protection I got is at http://www.premierpaintguard.com

I also noticed you have a z3? do you still have it, what engine? I jumped from the z3 to the new z4, but kept hold of the 3 as I have had it since new and is immaculate and couldn't part with it.

Hope you are enjoying your car!

Cheers for the pic and link :) where you have highlighted is where I would expect chipping too occur, so glad I fitted the mudflaps now to be honest, I'm guessing the sills are plastic but I'm a bit anal trying to keep the paintwork in good nick.

Still have the Z3 :) in fact I'm using at the mo so the Z4 is tucked up the garage on a battery charger :) MOT is due next monday :o Its only the 1.9 but is the Sport version with Mtech suspension etc and have added a fair few ACS parts. I originally bought it as it only had 21k on the clock, that was 4 years ago and is just coming upto 24K :) Its not fast but still drives nice and still prefer the looks over the E89, much more classic roadster, like yourself couldn't part with it :)

Cheers,

Tim.
