3L e46 engine.

Well it probably depends quite a bit on what you have at the moment!

Assuming you have a pre-facelift E85 the 3.0i in those was the same engine as fitted to the E46 330i, so it shouldn't be a difficult swap.

But I believe the 2.2i and 2.5i engines in pre-facelifts all had a 5 speed gearbox, whereas the 3.0i had a 6 speed - but then pre-facelift E46 330is had a 5 speed and only got a 6 speed with the E46 facelift in 2003.

Plus 3.0i Z4s and E46s had larger front brakes than smaller-engined models so you might need an upgrade in the stopping department!

The real question here is why the OP is contemplating this. Surely its cheaper to buy a 3.0 and sell their existing 2.5 etc. Especially when you consider it's not just as simple as an engine swap and the 3.0 is better specced as standard

That is pretty much the answer I was looking for. The engine in question is for sale nearby for £450 with 74000 miles. Too much work for me though.

Sorry to go off topic here a little but what is the biggest BMW branded engine anyone has put in a Zed? I have 2007 SI.

I don't suppose you could put the V8 motor from the M3 (2008 ish version)?

Here's the thread

Next to thte 5L v10 there are also LS swaps (6ish lilter) and I think there's even a dodge viper v10 swap (8L?) (obviously they are not bmw branded..)
But mind you, that is a very difficult process.

Offtopic: that is a bargain though, certainly compared to mainland prices.

Someone did an 8.3Ltr V10 from a Dodge Ram SRT, same engine they fit to the Viper.. :o :o

V8s would fit nicely as they are shorter and there is plenty of width for them.

But re swapping 2.5 to 3.0 probably not worth it unles you do the work yourself and want to do it as a fun project. ECUs would need to change wiring harnes is probably similar but ecu pin outs might need swapping around?! The gearbox I would think would fit but is it worth it probably not.

Holy mother of god.

This has got my imagination going. I recently created a post asking how long my car will last... Maybe if the engine goes I could swap it :O

A viper engine would be insane, but I love the idea of the V8 or V10, especially given that it's BMW originally.

Are the garages that specialise in this kind of stuff. I have little to no diy experience when it comes to cars. Engine change way off the cards!

You could ask Stevie w if he'd build another, the workmanship is top class

But you will need bloody deep pockets! As it’s a whole lot of work!!

Yeah, not just the V10 if you went that route. You'd need to beef up all the other components, suspension, brakes, steering, etc, etc, etc. It would be more for the engineering prowess rather than adding value.

There are places that specialise in certain transplants - a year or so ago I read a thread on Pistonheads where someone had bought a crated Chevy LS V8 and put it in an E46 330Ci, but I'm sure the guy did it for a living (in the Midlands somewhere IIRC) and decided to have one himself!

Then there was the thread last night about the Z4C with a Toyota 2JZ with 575 bhp.

If you've got the skill or the cash nearly anything is possible - but maybe not practical or sensible.

Thomas Zurawski from Zurawski motorsport in Gloucester has done a lot of BMW V8 swaps his work is extremely good.

If I was doing one and not doing it myself. He would be the guy i would speak to.
