35i Oil Catch Can Fitting

Hi All,

Well I gave Scarlet, my 35i an early Christmas present today by fitting a Mishimoto baffled oil catch can.
For those not familiar with oil catch cans they are fitted in the engine breather system between the engine and the inlet manifold to catch oil vapour etc before it reaches the inlet manifold. They are widely used particularly in direct injection petrol engines to minimise inlet valve coking and potentially reduce emissions overall.
I fitted the can from Mishimoto due to its sintered copper filter which is far and above any other brand for efficiency.
Fittted the optional drain kit as well, simply for convenience.
A few pictures posted below for anyone interested.
You can find the kit here https://www.mishimoto.co.uk/bmw-n54-baffled-oil-catch-can-kit-07.html
It is designed for the 3 series car but fits the Z4 easily as shown. You can also find a fitting video on the mishimoto site, ignore all the first few minutes until you get to removing the engine cover.
Removing the original vacuum pipe is difficult and I managed to break the clips on both ends of mine, I got a replacement from BMW for £31, the part number is on the pipe..
You will need a heat gun/hairdryer/stanley knife to remove the fittings from the new vacuum pipe which you need to attach the supplied hoses.

It’s a shame the oil mist can’t be directed onto the suspension springs to stop corrosion/snapping :P
Good mod, anything that stops the engine breathing oily fumes has got to be an improvement

Oil mist would be full of moisture and acids, don't think you would want that on any metal parts.

Nice work there Mark  I think I may have to get one of those myself after seeing the state of the intake valves when I did the walnut blasting on mine a couple of months ago at around 63000 miles
