I think the pre face-lift rear lights look like something off a coach (like the Mclaren F1 which actually are from a coach). Amber has never been a strong look. The LED bars on the face-lift look great at night imo.
They were definitely not from a coach!
Given how complex the manufacturing process was it's easy to understand why BMW went for more basic tail lights with the facelift.

A plastic fry is not complex, it's just a logistical pain in the bum. The replacement used better technology from LED to extra lights under heavy braking.

Not literally from a coach (as the F1 was) but you get the idea...

You know the part i really miss is the french fries I cant belive people take them off they really suit the shape on rear. Both rear lights are good pre and facelift. I think when their off then pre wins but when switched on at night the facelift does look nicer more brighter too. It does look like a electric fire elements from the 90's but still nice. A lot of the newer style lights on the mercs and audi are quite the same now. Lots of bright lines that really stand out from behind.
