3.5i prices New & Used

I'm thinking about upgrading to an E89 3.5i
What I need to know is what is the best model to buy?
What should I expect to pay for a new one with all the discounts that are being bounded about and if there are so many discounts how has that affected the 2nd hand market and what should I pay for a 2 year old model with average mileage
Thanks

Broadspeed are quoting: Z4 sDrive35i M Sport 3.0 Petrol Automatic 2dr £32,641 which is a saving of £12,254

Looking at Autotrader a 2.5 year old one with 14,000 mile is going for £29k http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201409167450662/sort/default/postcode/ch21hn/radius/1500/page/1/keywords/sDrive35i%20/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/make/bmw/usedcars/transmission/automatic?logcode=p

Makes sense to go new for the extra £3500'ish!!!

Also worth noting too that apart from being a 35is and not the 35i the car for sale on auto trader also has some optional extras which are then in addition to the broad speed price. Broads speed quote for a basic model with no toys.

Captainken, FWIW I've just been through exactly the same thought process as yourself.

Back in May I'd more or less firmed up on a Z4 and started to spreadsheet used prices for 35i's to get a feel for the market. I wanted a manual box, so the 35is was out. I was looking for a 1 or 2 year old car with sub 10k miles. Needless to say these things disappear when you actually want one. I then came across coast2coast and Broadspeed and a new car rather than used suddenly came into the process. Why pay £28 - £30k when a new car can be had for not much more?

Armed with something to haggle with I went into my local Sytner dealer, fully expecting to be shown the door. Guess what? They were very accommodating and realistic and in August I placed an order for a black on black 35i M Sport Manual with Comfort Pack, SW Heating, 326 M alloys and 5 Year Service Inclusive for £34,250. I've since been back and added Heated Seats, Media Pack and Pro Speaker Pack and managed to get these discounted as well (which I was doubtful of).

So rather than have the worry of what someone else may have done to the car prior to my ownership I have relative peace of mind for the next 3 years and servicing costs covered for 5. Build is scheduled for the end of October with a November delivery to me, so counting the days.

Can't afford to buy any food now of course.........................

OUt of interest, what options are definitely worth having/considering? What are the must haves in your guys views?

When I was talking with the dealer about having the Media Pack included he said that you might get 25% of the option cost back when you come to resell the car - which is refreshingly honest but not very inspiring. He did add that it would make the car easier to sell though, which is common sense.

I think the answer to your question is a balance between what options you'll make most use of vs how deep are your pockets. Plus how long you intend to keep the car: I'd hate to go through 5 years thinking I wish I'd had this and I wish I'd included that. I enjoy driving cars like this through the winter with the roof retracted when the weather's dry so heated comfort was high on my list. In fact most of my "wants" made it onto the "musts" list eventually which is why I had to go back and amend the order.

I test drove a Z4 and forgot to listen to the basic radio system fitted. When I eventually did hear it I was so underwhelmed by it's poor sound delivery it turned from something "livable with" to "Oh dear". Something else I had to amend. I think BMW should hang their head in shame for putting something so poor in a car like this. But it's all about getting into your pockets. Just my view.

Basics you must have

Sports Seats
Heated Seats
Anything above base hi Fi
Decent alloys
Service Pack
Folding mirrors
Bluetooth, although that may be standard

From recent experience the prices of 35i's on the second hand market have significantly dropped with these brand new dealer offers. Trawling 6 months ago it seemed that £25k for a 4 yr old 35i was par for the course but they seem to have dropped to the £18k-£20k now with some nice 35iS around for that money. Having just Part Ex'd in my immaculate heavily spec'd 2010 35i for this kind of money it was a bit of a shock to have taken such a hit.

There are some really great "nearly new" 35iS models out there at great value.

When looking I personally wasn't interested unless it had Sat nav, nice colour combo, extedned lighting package and extended bluetooh - as to what is standard there I don't know.
