3.0si - starting issue

Hi,

I posted about this but within another thread a couple of weeks ago.

When starting the car from a cold start (overnight) I often (but not always) find that the engine turns/cranks but doesn’t fire/start at all - I’ve kept the key turned for around 10 seconds max before switching off.

However, if this occurs, on every occasion, if I immediately try to start again - it cranks, fires and starts.
There are no follow on issues after this until the next cold start.

I reported this under warranty when the car was in the dealers for an oil service and they said that whilst they were unable to find anything, a "software update" appeared to match my symptoms so they applied it.

The issue didn’t occur again until yesterday..its booked back in for other warranty work, so they will look at this again then.

But until then, any ideas?

Cheers
Jamie

how old is the Battery - had the exact same thing with my mini, tried everything, then changed the battery and fixed the problem

I seem to recall a similar problem some people were having back on 2003/2004. The quick remedy was to turn the key to pos #2 and wait a few seconds before starting the engine. I think it was something about all the system checks needing to be performed first or something like that. Anyway, it worked. :)

they can work in different ways - starter motor, fuel pump etc. Old cars used to turn over but wouldnt start. Would of thought if it was an immobilser issue that the engine wouldnt even turn over on a modern car and the likes of a error light would come up.

I havent tried both keys - but will try that idea - interesting.

Thanks for the position 2 idea - but frankly thats simply a workaround and not a fix to the actual problem - dealers will have to fix it under warranty !!

Jamie it might be a workaround, but if it works it might give the dealer something to go on.

Agreed!

Updated on a separate thread - dealers are replacing the ignition switch - lets see what happens
