3.0si Coupe - Rough/Hesitant

My list of things to do has just got longer.

I've just been out for a drive and the car was great, just the reason why I bought it.

I stopped for around 15 minutes and a minute into the return journey the EML comes on accompanied by the car starting to run in a rather lumpy/hesitant way.

The journey home was around 10 miles and in that time there was a mixture of A and B roads. The car will sit quite happily at 60mph and also ticks over okay. However when you accelerate gently it is really hesitant but if you accelerate hard it seems okay.

To provide more info on the car it has done 88k miles. It last had an Inspection 2 service in Oct 2010 at 81k miles.

Any thoughts or is there anyone with a code reader near Stone, Staffordshire that might like to help?

It could be a number of things to be honest, I'd have a quick check over all your breather hoses whilst your at home, then when you get the opportunity get the eml codes read and dealt with. Best of luck

Get the codes first.

Check on the Carly thread to see if there's anyone close.

Has the car been left unused over the winter?

Bad fuel?

Probably a spark plug or coil pack needs changed or something else.

Need the codes to narrow it down a bit really.

Could be a lot of things. Checks you can do:

Check codes first, or find someone close who can
Check intake boot for splits/obvious signs of damage
Check the breather hoses for small splits

When checking pipes pay special attention to the curves/connections for small splits. They often only become apparent under stress/load.

Finally: last inspection 2 in 2010 is 12 years, so it could well do with new plugs. While you’re at it, you might want to consider replacing the coils as well at that age.

Good luck with hunting down the problem!

I should read what I post, Inspection 2 was Oct 2020.

Anyway looks like it was the MAF sensor. A friend has a code reader which came up with P1424.

I then borrowed his car’s MAF sensor and the car runs fine again.

Any opinions on replacements?

Get the original equipment replacement MAF not some mickey mouse copy. The copies may be cheap but false economy over the long term as they tend to fail just after the warranty period. good luck

This.

Thanks for all the comments.

What do we consider being an acceptable MAF sensor? I know that there is the cheap rubbish on Ebay but are the Hella ones any good around Β£120? I've not had a price yet from BMW.......

That's the part but is the Siemens VDO part better?

The Siemens VDO one would seem to be around Β£175

Mate of mine had his MAF sensor changed. I'll ask him where he bought it from tomorrow.

It was a branded name from eBay or Eurocarparts / Carparts4less.

Whichever one was cheaper!

I've ordered a genuine Siemens VDO part from a company called BM Parts Store, Wolverhampton. Close to half the price from a main dealer.

Very good price and I pay when I collect which could be tomorrow afternoon if it arrives in time.

Hopefully that'll fix the issue even though it's only a coo pee! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
I do hope so, I've had the car a month and in that time it's had -

An unfriendly encounter with a Mini resulting in a new headlamp and bumper, although I did also get the r/h wing painted.
A sticking left front brake calliper.
And now the MAF sensor.

Other than that the car is brilliant and it puts a smile on my face everything I drive it. My daily car is a 640d GC and although it is a great car, quick, comfortable and ultimately quicker than the Z4 it is so boring.

As for those strange cars where the roof folds down that it just another thing that goes wrong, my wife's 325 convertible proved that when the roof got stuck and despite BMW providing the parts FOC it still cost close to Β£1k to put right, 6 years ago!

All sorted, MAF sensor picked up and installed tonight and the car is back to normal and both me and my wife think it sounds quieter too.

I really must also recommend https://www.bmpartsstore.com

Sam uses Paypal for payment so when I collected the MAF sensor today we had a good chat and when it came to pay he just sent me a Paypal invoice after I had left with the part. I must have an honest face!
